Hi,

I am having this weird problem with my new 1TB hard drive.
I just tried to install it yesterday.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-8AENXP-D.
I believe that the MB is detecting the HDD but it cannot read the amount.

What happens is that in POST the MB would usually list the HDD name and disk space amount.

Ex.

0 WDCxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ###########
1 WDCxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ###########

After installing the new HDD, it just list the new (1TB) drive's name and it just stops there.
It looks like the MB is trying to read the amount, but something is wrong.

This is how it looks:

0 WDCxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

After this, it just stops there...no windows....I can't even go to BIOS because
the MB has to go through this detection process.

I tested the new drive on my new computer, it is working fine.

If you have any ideas, please share them with me.

Many thanks in advance.

Okay, it seems to me that after installing the new drive the mobo is trying to establish and detect it. If you have the mobo set to auto detect there could be a conflict, first thing is to see if it is listed in the BIOS....then make sure to set the main drive to BOOT DRIVE.

I am not familiar with your board....but sometimes as in my old ASUS if you put the drives on certain SATA ports it boots differnently.

You can limit the amount of time the mobo searches...make sure you have the 2nd drive set to slave not master (boot) and once in windows set it up in there under disk management.

COMPUTERS ARE NOT JUST MY LIFE...THEY ARE MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THEN THAT.
GO SELL CRAZY SOMEWHERE ELSE....WE'RE ALL STOCKED UP HERE!!!!!!

Problem solved.

I am not sure why, but the primary chipset is having some issues with this drive or 1 TB drives.

The MB comes with a secondary chipset that provides 4 SATA channels.
I tried one of them and things are just fine.

Hi Zero

Sorry for this long post.....

I have been trying to install a new 1TB Samsung HD1035J HDD on my GA-8AEXNP-D and going crazy because it was doing the same as you describe.... So imagine my joy when I saw your post :-)

However all is not quite plain sailing :-(

My bootable HDD is connected to the Sil 3114 SATA connection and works fine. When I try to connect the 1TB disk to this chipset's SATA connection, I face the same problem that you first mention. So I connected my 1TB disk to the on-board SATA connector as you suggested and lo-and-behold, I booted into XP. However once in XP, in Disk Managment, I cannot see the new disk at all! I checked my BIOS settings and I can see that the 1TB disk has been recognised.

So, then I connected my bootable HDD into the on-board SATA connection and tried again. It got through until the beginning of the WinXP splash screen and then rebooted. This happens every time.

Either my on-board SATA connections are not working or I need to do something in my BIOS settings.

Any help very gratefully received.

Thanks.

Hi Kinnan,

I believe the whole issue would be resolved with a BIOS update. Unfortunately, there are
not recent BIOS updates from Gigabyte for this MB. I was going to contact them, but I got lazy.

So I connected my 1TB disk to the on-board SATA connector as you suggested and lo-and-behold, I booted into XP. However once in XP, in Disk Managment, I cannot see the new disk at all! I checked my BIOS settings and I can see that the 1TB disk has been recognised.

Try to format your hard drive before you boot into Windows.
I hope this will help. (Use Hiren's CD...it has many partitioning tools)

You could try to call Gigabyte. It would be the faster way to contact them. I usually
contact them by e-mail, and they take a long time to respond. I am not sure if this has changed.

I will let you know if I get anything from Gigabyte.

Good luck with this and let us know if get around this problem. :)

Hi Zero

Hallelujah - solved!

Answer is still to put the 1TB drive in the on-board (ICH6R) SATA slots as identified by you. The reason I could not see this from Device management was that there was no RAID controller driver installed for the on-board SATA. Once i downloaded and installed the latest ICH6R drivers, everything worked fine.

Incidentally, a 500GB disk works fine in the Sil3114 SATA slot. It looks like the Sil3114 BIOS does not recognise disks over 500GB.

Hi Kinnan,

I glad it worked out for you.

I contacted Gigabyte but the person who was supporting me was not helpful at all.

Here is it:

Me: First E-Mail

Hi,

I am having this weird problem with my new 1TB hard drive.

What happens is that in POST the Motherboard would usually list the HDD name and disk space amount.

Ex.

HDD# HDD Name Amount
0 WDCxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx #########
1 WDCxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx #########

After installing the new HDD, it just list the new (1TB) drive's name and it just stops there.
It looks like the Motherboard is trying to read the amount, but something is stopping it.

This is how it looks:

HDD# HDD Name Amount
0 WDCxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

After this, it just stops there...no windows....I can't even go to BIOS because
the Motherbaord has to go through this detection process.

The problem happens when I connect the hard drive to one of the native
SATA ports.

To Avoid this problem, I had to connect it to the secondary SATA chip.
The drive works fine with the secondary SATA chip (Sil 3114).

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Have a nice day.

Dear -----,

Thank you for your kindly mail and inquiry. Because there are too many kinds of HDDs available in the retail market, it is very difficult to test all of the modules with our MB products.

Thus, if possible, we suggest you can test your system with other HDD to see if there's a compatibility or motherboard problem

At last, if you still have any further question or suggestion about our products/service, please do not hesitate to contact with us. We will try our best to help you resolve the problem ASAP.

Regards,
GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY

Me: Second E-Mail

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

I forgot to mention in my last message that I own other HDDs.

I have two 320GB and one 500GB drives. All of them are Western Digital drives.

The problem I am inquiring about seems to happen only with the 1TB drives
and only when I connect to it the native SATA port. It works fine when connected to
the secondary SATA chipset.

Moreover, I also own a newer computer for which the motherboard is also a Gigabyte.
The model is GA-EP45-UD4P. The 1TB drive works just fine on the native SATA ports of this motherboard.

One more thing, I am a member of a forum. Someone else on the forums reported the same problem with a Samsung HDD drive. The drive is also 1TB.

It is fairly safe to say that the problem is triggered with 1TB drives only.
There are no issues with the other drives that has less capacity.

Looking forward to your response.

Thank you for your support.

Dear ----,

Thank you again for your kindly mail. We suggest you can contact WD for HDD firmware then try again to see if there's a firmware problem.

But if the problem still occur, then there may be a compatible problem with the HDD and the Intel controller, we suggest you can connect the HDD to the Sil3114 controller for better system compatibility, sorry for the inconvenience.

Regards,
GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY

I am not sure if I will contact them again regarding this.

I think it is a BIOS problem...but they say it could be a firmware issue with the HDD
itself.

I am just that happy the drive is working fine.

I will let you know if any developments come up.

Have a nice day. :)
