Hi all...

Well, if you all recall several months ago, my wife's computer had BSOD issues. After suggestions from this forum, I determined that her MOBO had gone bad. As luck would have it, I found an electronics tech in my networking class and he took a look at the mobo. He found 2 bad capicators on it, and is replacing them. Cost, $50.00 total. Hopefully that resolves the issue. Otherwise, her Gateway computer mobo is $230.00 as they no longer make BTX AMD 939 socket mobos :(

Now to the latest issue.

My Gateway GM5088 computer (I know I know..but we got a good deal on the two of them together in 2006) had a mobo issue. Luckily, I found a replacement online for $129.00 (AMD 939, but different model than wifes thank goodness).

I'm running Win XP Media Center. The computer came with 4 USB 2.0 ports in the back, and two in the front.

All I did was swap in mobos...that's it. I also ensured that all drivers were updated as well. However, I am banging my head with the USB issue. Everytime I plug in a thumbdrive, I get a message down at the lower right corner that says it can't find a high speed USB port, and says for me to install a USB 2.0 high speed port for faster performance. I have not done anything other than swap the mobos.

Of course, I sent Gateway a request to see what those dorks had to say...all they would say is that they can't find my S/N in their records and to recheck and send the S/N so that they can address the problem. WTH??? So I took a picture of the S/N and sent it to them and said who gives a rats ass...I told you the model number and the mobo number..tell me what to do to fix it. I should have copied/pasted the response..you just KNEW it was coming from India!

Anyway, could someone steer me in a direction here? I'm guessing that there might be a jumper configured wrong. The mobo is salvaged, but is guarenteed to work for 90 days. Everything else is working well with it. I did notice that the computer model number is not the same, so I'm wondering if I need to flash the BIOS with the correct model?

Norm,

You got a couple of issue here in regards to your USB situation by swapping to the current mb....

What OS are you running?

The mb you recently obtained could be much older than the original one and it could have the older type USB 1.0 versus the original mb's USB 2.0.... and hence your message when you plug a USB 2.0 version device into it.

By chance if you are running Windows 98..... You have to install drivers for USB 2.0 for the mb.

If by chance the replacement mb has USB 1.0 ports..... well..... you cant do anything about it... The device should still work.... just at the slower speed and you will always get that message every time you plug in a USB 2.0 device, which by way all of the devices are these days...

OOPppsss..

just relooked at your post....

you are running Windows XP Media center and that your original computer came with USB 2.0

Ok... that leaves the possibility that your replacement mb contains USB 1.0 type..

What is the make and model number of your replacement mb???

never had a Gateway myself...... but can you obtain drivers for your model of Gateway from Gateway website since you said that the mb is the same? you want to see if they have a chipset/mb driver set...

even though the two mb are the same.... with the swap.... The OS will see them as two different mb and will try to install each component as if they were newly added to the system. And maybe somehow the USB hub on the mb was not installed correctly during first power on.

Another thing you may want to try is to go into Device Manager.... and uninstall everything under the Universal Serial Bus controller.... cold boot and let the OS rediscover them again and reload the drivers for them....... (do it as your own risk)

If the two mb are truely the same.... then I suspect it is some sort of driver issue.

I was thinking of removing the USB devices, etc. and doing reboot to see if OS would reload and address the issue. I'll mess with it after Cisco homework is done :)

I assume you've verified that your Hubs are in fact being recognized as high-speed hubs?, and that you've tried different thumbdrives?

I've had at least 2 USB2.0 thumbdrives that after some period of time refused to be recognized as 2.0 devices. They both continued to work fine at 1.0 speeds. I did notice that one of them consumed almost twice the current (mA) that it used to (after being dropped into a hot-tub but then thoroughly dried-out (in warmed location) for 2 weeks before using again).

To check out the hubs, go to the device manager. To get there using the menus...
settings>control panel>perf and maint>system>hardware>device manager>universal serial bus controller
If your hub is 2.0 you should see
"Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller"

Using "Properties" and "advanced" tab, you can also explore around a bit and see such things as how much current the ports can supply and how much current any device using a "USB Root Hub" is using.

Well, there are two entries in the device manager...I wish I could post a screen shot here...

Ok, at the "root" level, there are two entries that say Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

Opening the first root shows the following in order from top to bottom:
HP Officejet J5700 Series (DOT4USB) (this is my printer that is plugged in back via USB)
Media Card Reader
Standard Open HCD USB Host Controller
USB Composite Device
USB Printing Support
USB Root Hub

The second Universal Serial Bus Controllers entry, when opened, shows:

PCI Class USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller
USB 2.0 Root Hub Device

There are no conflicts/errors showing on the device manager on any of these, and all show that they are enabled and working correctly. I can't find my "true" thumbdrive..I was trying to use a 128m one that was issued to me for my digitial forensics class. That was the one that worked fine before the mobo problems.

So, if I should have to reinstall the USB items..do I do that through the device manager like rolling back the drivers or such?
