A friend's drive has stopped responding for an unknown time, it doesn't even show up on my computer or device manager on xp. Before I replace it, is there any easy way to check whether the mobo is at fault, don't want to burn money..

Ta!

Are you saying it used to work EXACTLY as configured and then suddenly stopped working, or did you install it and it never worked?

A quick hardware check is in order. You need to check data cables, connectors and connector position on the cable, that the correct data cable is being used, the Master/Slave/Cable-Select jumper configuration is correct, and power (for example, try a different 4-pin power cable...I'm assuming it's an IDE drive).
