As you may or may not know I am travelling to the good 'ol USA in november. And like I was thinking about how a fresbie gets bigger the closer it gets to you it "HIT ME"

Would it be a good idea to get a new DX11 card in the states in November? What would be the pros and cons. For a start are you allowed buy electronic devices for use in a different countries, I am thinking I would nearly be getting it half price due to the weak ass dollar at the moment.

This is of course assuming the ATi UBER card or nVidia are worth getting but I will be selling my old GTX295 to Tam the Bam (he does not know this yet) PMSL.

????????

Faints! :O

If you buy a card in the states, it will be fine. If you have to declare anything at
customs on the way home, you declare it as a gift for someone you rich bastard!
As for the component working here, it will work no problem. When I had my 7800GTX
back in the day, I wanted to SLi. So i bought a card from eBay (seller was New Yorken)
and that card worked perfectly. It would only be a PSU that would cause a problem ( a cheap
one at that).
I have £3 here waiting for that card. You'd better buy it! lol :P

Of course it will work, why wouldn't it??

Its not a bloomin' DVD :P

PCI-E, has to conform to PCI-E spec. Simple.

You should save a few quid, and wouldn't bother declaring a single card

Tam - I'll give ya €1.50 for one of the GPU's lol

TBH I was not on about if the card would work or not I was on about customs etc and maybe warranty etc.....depending on what brand I got. So there is no major factors to consider really!

The only thing is how to confuse my girlfriend that the GTX295 I onlt got is my sound card and I HAVE TO GET a DX11 or the computer will not let her access FACEBOOK!

Also I would just do what I did when I got my old DSLR camera....leave the box behind and act like I brought it with me.

Yeah, because tourists carrying around brand new graphics cards is a real common phenomenon!

Or
, leave it in the box, put it in your suit case, and go home!

Back to topic where is the best place to buy components in the US. Bare in mind that I will have to "ACTUALLY" buy the item. Does Newegg have an actual store?

I will be in Orlando if that helps.

I would. My relatives from Norway always buy stuff here and if they can't fit it in their bag they just ship it back to their house. Same with Christmas gifts. There isn't a Newegg store. I've been to Orlando a few times, dad used to live there, but I didn't notice any computer stores. Best Buy is probably your best bet. You prob wont save as much as you could if you go there though. I would suggest Fry's Electronics but I think they are primarily west coast.

Plug,

Too bad that your schedule and my schedule dont match at Disney World... You could send me the funds.... I order the card and we would hook up for dinner at one of the parks and I can give it to you.... Newegg is one of the best and sometimes the best when it comes to pricing...

You may know this, but...

If you take the card in carry-on luggage, be prepared for:

Possible seizure (as you can't turn it on to prove it isn't part of some kind of bomb control device, plus some countries are just sometimes weird about electronic circuit cards carried by passengers...had unusual experiences in Japan customs). Some countries also have restrictions on bringing ANY technology in for business purposes. Early in my career I had a manager that told me to just tell them some prototype circuit boards were for "personal use" and only later found out the country could have imposed criminal charges and fines on me personally for doing so.

Rough handling by the TSA gorillas. If you complain or warn them about fragility some DO react negatively. I don't want to see you on YouTube with 3 TSAs tasering an "suspiciously acting passenger that seemed unduly over-protective of unidentified electronic components". I think most of you would have been surprised how one TSA agent reacted when I very politely complained how she was man-handling my back/neck brace while I was still wearing it! She got MAD and called in her supervisor (who was thankfully rational and understanding).

They will undoubtedly remove the card(s) from any protective packaging, and static charge builds-up on just about everything in the screening area, including the people, containers, belts, etc

They may zap it multiple times through whatever imaging system they are using. Not normally a problem but I grow increasingly concerned with poorly calibrated x-ray machines (when using old tech) and new process wafers...with potential for latent damage from induced voltage.

If you carry it in stowed luggage, be sure your and/or your airline's insurance will cover its theft (I mean, accidental loss). They pay by pound and there can be unreasonably low caps.

Have your receipts handy just in case (and make backup copies for yourself...I've had customs agents walk off with documents and never return, forcing search for them/supervisors and/or the documents).
