I've never had any kind of trouble installing Windows XP updates on my laptop machine, which I have had for 3 or 4 years.

I have automatic updates set on my computer. And for the past week or so, I have not been able to install the latest update. The little yellow icon with the exclamation mark has been eye balling me in the bottom right corner and I've tried probably 10 times at random to get it to install, but it will not.

I get this message, everytime...

The following updates were not installed:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297)

What I don't understand is, why is it failing to install a Service Pack 1 update??? Isn't XP on Service Pack 3 ??? I thought newly released Service Pack's basically 'overwrote' the previous Service Pack.

You might just try downloading and installing the current level of .NET Framework. That might get rid of the pesky update notices as well. It's currently upto .NET3.5 SP1, I think.

As always, recommend backing up the system disk before you make changes...especially with long downloads where data can be unpredictably corrupted.

Strange. I was actually installing Windows XP last night, and after a couple updates and a restart, Service Pack 2 was the first service pack that was installed. I am currently having some trouble installing SP3. It started to download last night, but never went anywhere once if was finished (or so it seemed). I left it on for a couple hours and nothing happened so I clicked cancel and immediately it said The following was not installed: Service Pack 3.

Im'a try again today. Do you go to MS's update website thing or do you wait for windows itself to download/install them?

Install it direct from source:

Good luck, I've had this before and just went to the site and dragged it down.

I dunno guys.. none of this is working. I've even done searches thru google on other forums of similar cases like this, and nothing seems to help. It's really bugging me. There is something preventing me from installing this update. I'm leading to believe I have a virus.

"A security issue has been identified that could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to compromise your system and gain control over it. You can help protect your system by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this update, you may have to restart your system."

That's the update, and the description is "Microsoft.NET Framework1.1 SP1 Security Update"

The 1.1 is what is confusing me. Why is it trying to update an earlier update? None of the 3.5 updates do anything to resolve this issue of mine......

Ryan,

If you have the latest version (3.5) then if I was you I'd hide the update. ;)

Regarding any virus, try this online scanner - don't worry, this is a good one!
