On my old laptop I cant access anything, the computer loads but I cant open anything. It is completely frozen, the mouse cursor moves round but I cant open anything. Only task manager works by pressing control alt and delete. Im prety sure I have a virus does anyone know how I can get my notebook working again?

Any help appreciated thanks

Sounds more like your "old" laptop is too old and on its last legs.
One or more of your Hardware could be dying. Boot the laptop into safemode
and run your AV from there if you still think it's a virus.

Good point booting into safe mode, Tam. Also, when you boot into safe mode, be sure that you boot into safe mode with networking, go to download.com and grab up a copy of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Malwarebytes will scan in safe mode. When Malwarebytes is updated, unhook your internet connection so you will avoid downloading more malware.

If you are still having trouble even while in safe mode, it could be like Tam has mentioned or it could be a patching virus along with a few other nasty instances of malware. The only way I've ever had any success against a patching virus is by using Dr. Web's Cure It cd and combo fix. You can download the bootable iso of Dr. Web's cd from here:

You can download combo fix from here:

http://www.combofix.org/download.php

I would stress backing up everything first before going to war against a bunch of nasty malware. If everything functions well in safe mode, I would take advantage of that moment and back up everything important to you.

Are you trying to use the touchpad?
Try an external mouse. Plug it into the PS2 port or a USB port and re-boot.

Only read the manual as a last resort.
