can I set up fax on Windows XP using a Versalink D90-327W30-06 modem? I do NOT have a "telephone" line, only the DSL line.

Hi Betty
Nice to see a girl on this forum.
No, you cannot fax without having a phone line.
But. who uses faxes these days - just scan and email what you have to send.

Only read the manual as a last resort.

There are some on-line services that let you send a document(s) as an actual FAX to a recipient. (e.g. eFax.com)

Downside
Potential loss of privacy
More expensive than sending it yourself

If you only have to FAX a few people a month, and you're not worried about privacy, then an on-line service might work well for you.

But if you have to send a lot of FAXes every month, then it might be cheaper to just get a "normal" phone line, assuming the DSL modem "phone" line doesn't support FAXing. You'd have to do your own cost/benefit calculations.

Some experimenting might prove useful:
I've never tried it, but the DSL modem does have a port for a phone, so if you have a second computer all you MIGHT need to do is plug-in a FAX/modem from the second computer. (or, could one even install a FAX/modem in the existing computer (different interrupts, etc) and use it as the input to the DSL modem's Phone jack?)

I just did a search and came across this item.

It points you to
http://faxzero.com/
which looks interesting, in that they do offer FREE on-line FAXing if you don't mind advertisement on the cover page, and few other restrictions
Free Fax
Ad on the cover page
Fax 1 document - maximum 3 pages
Maximum 2 free faxes per day

edit to add a bit more info on FAXing using DSL and using on-line FAX services:
