I am reasonably efficient at upgrading memory, fixing software issues and general maintnance on computers to help them run faster so generally my friends come to me for minor things.

My sisters co-worker asked me to fix his laptop (apparently some employees used it to visit sites they shouldnt and Im assuming its spyware and viruses). I tried to power up and no lights come on and no sounds can be heard coming from the laptop. I have tried it with just the battery, the power cord alone and battery out (the only light I see is where the power cord connects) and both the battery and plug attached. When I got it it was slightly sticky and I was told he was wiping it off earlier that day. I am trying to determine if this is a hardware issue or if someone might have spilled something on it causing it not to power on. If anyone has an idea on how to fix please let me know.

This is due to a faulty mainboard. It is common with the v3000, v6000, dv2000, dv600 and dv9000 hp laptops.

probably easiest to just tell him to get a new one then? Looks like a pretty crappy system from the sounnds of things all over different forums.

Well, I'd suggest calling and seeing if they have any repair options for you and what the cost would run before I looked into a completely new computer; although I'd say that they probably spilled something on it. A way to check would be by opening up the case a little bit and seeing if there's any internal residue.

It may be under HPs extended warranty ( they add an extra year to certain models for the issue you are explaining ). So call them and explain the situation and ask them about the service enhancement. They will ask for the serial number and product number of the laptop ( underneath it ) and they can check for you, then it can be fixed for free. If not, then it probably isn't worth it.

If you suspect something was spilled into it, I'd just be blunt and ask. It does no one any good to have you waste your time chasing down a lot of possible problems if it's all due to an accident like that.

Depending on the notebook, it's usually not too difficult to pop the keyboard to look for evidence of "splashing". Directions for disassembly are sometimes easily found on the net.
