Fellow Forum Members,
I have close to 2000 Ebooks on a wide variety of subjects. What is the best File Manager / Catalog app that will let me setup my own custom category directory tree with links to the actual source file?

I do not want to use Windows XP Window Explorer to create a bunch of nested folders with my ebooks organized inside. I want an app that will let me setup hyperlinks to the source files and that will enable me to create a directory tree that exists outside of Windows XP Windows Explorer. Any suggestions on what the app this is up to this task will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I personally am not aware of anything, but I do have an idea. If you have over 2k this would be a ton of work, but one option would be to create a shortcut to each file and then categorize them in a hierarchy of folders.

Are you remote reading them via internet or something? Not sure what you're going for.

You can always use a bookmarks manager within a browser and access them from the browser address bar.

edit to add:
There are also several excellent replacements* for Windows Explorer that provide a LOT more functionality, but again, I'm not sure what you're going for.

I've exclusively used XYplorer for years now and the only time I ever use Windows Explorer is if some other program beyond my control invokes it (usually a MS Windows admin/maintenance program).

*XYplorer, xplorer2, etc.

John,
Thanks for pointing me to XYplorer. I have reviewed the XYplorer website and I'm wondering if you can clarify something.

I have 2000 ebooks inside a folder called "EBOOKS". My objective is to create a folder structure for the EBOOKS folder not using Windows Explorer but instead an alternate file manager app that will let me create a virtual file structure tree for the EBOOKS folder.

Why not just use Windows Explorer? Because I want to be able to print out a report of the file structure. Windows Explorer does not enable one to print out a report that will show all of the files and what folder they are nested in. In short I want an app that will print out a folder tree for me. Does XYplorer have a feature that will let me setup a virtual file structure and then let me print out a folder tree? I would appreciate it if you can clarify this about XYplorer. Thanks.

P.S. No, I am not reading from the internet. The files are on my PC and I just want to organize them using an app that is more feature rich than Windows Explorer.

John,
Something else I hope you can address regarding XYplorer and xplorer˛. Do you think either of these apps do a good job of managing data that is archived across a collection of 200 DVDs? In short, I am looking for an app that will also do the following:

I want to be able to load each of my 200 DVDs to my DVD tray and then have an app that will read what files are on each DVD and generate a database of all the 200 DVDs it scanned. Once it creates this file database (from scanning each DVD), it automatically keeps track of what files get transferred to my hard drive and what files remain archived onto anyone of the DVDs it has numerically labeled as a subset of my 200 DVD collection. Does such an app exist? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

John,
I think I found what I am looking for:

http://www.smartcdcatalog.com/

My question to anyone out there, "Is this the best app out there to manage a collection of 200 DVDs?" Is this the best app to setup a virtual file system?

My quest to finding the best Windows Explorer replacement app that does CD/DVD Cataloging, Report Printing, Virtual File Tree Structures, and File tracking has been narrowed to the following apps:

http://www.smartcdcatalog.com/

http://www.cdstorager.com/

http://www.wincatalog.com/?source=ws1_a4&kw=cd%20catalog&a...nAodcTEVNQ

http://www.collectorz.com/music/cd_catalog.php?from=google&...nAod7iUcMg

I would appreciate any opinions on what is the best app to go with. I want to make sure I am using the most feature rich app to accomplish the task of cataloging my 200 CD / DVD collection since I only want to do this one time and not have to redo it again in the future.

Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. I just finished doing computer maintenance and updating and not paying much attention to the internet.

But, it looks like you may have found something better for what you want to do.

However, XYplorer does have a "Report" feature which has worked for simple structures. You can choose data delimiters (e.g. tab, comma, custom, etc) Not sure if it would do exactly what you want. I think they provide a trial capability and that's probably the best way to find out if that other app doesn't work out for you.
