First it's not available for Home editions so I reinstall Pro and the stupid thing only shows in 16bit color. I mean why bother? Is that the best color Savage S3 can come up with? Did MS get a special price? And why even use S3 graphics? Stupid, just stupid...

There's a couple programs Win7 will never have drivers for. Like my Canon scanner and some old media programs I like that I can't seem to find a newer program I like to replace it with.

You run it with Windows Virtual PC. What's nice is you can run the XP Mode program in Win7 desktop without running the whole Virtual XP desktop. Though it's kind of a pain to use files from the physical HDd's without opening the whole virtual PC program.

These programs wont work with simply right clicking the short cut icon and telling it to run in xp mode?
Idk that is why i am asking.

No they won't even install in 7 either because of 7 or because it's 64bit. The XP Mode is a separate downloadable program that runs inside of virtual PC.

You know I got out my stop watch and timed some things with XP SP3 and Win7, like startup time, converting a 500MB wave file into mp3 and copying and moving a 7GB iso file to different drives and partitions and the difference is negligable. Actually the XP was faster by almost a minute copying the file from a storage partition to the root drive. Since I am using an RTM disc I can load any version so wanting to switch from Home premium to Pro to run the XP mode, I actually reinstalled both the Xp and 7 after running the copy test. I switched drives to see if the difference was the HD as one was Maxtor and the other WD, but it didn't change the times at all.

Even with my 32bit XP using only 3GBs of RAM and the Win7 x64 using 4GBs. 7 is way faster when it's a fresh install but it gets almost sluggish when I have all my crapola programs installed. So for me the only thing that it comes down to to persuade me to make the switch is DX10 and 64bit.

When you ran the test in which XP came out faster, were all anti-malware programs turned off (or not installed) in both the XP and Win7 tests? It can make a profound difference in file copying/moving/backing-up speeds by disabling the AV/AM programs. I would expect anti-malware programs to impact file operations in unpredictable ways depending on the OS.

I think partly it has to do with the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

and the other part is simply money.
(even though the license(s) is reasonable, when you've got a few dozen-to-hundred machines to upgrade hardware and software, and people to retrain, the costs can be unbelievably high and not in this year's (or even the next year's) budget...especially when you've been ordered to reduce your budget by 15% each year for the foreseeable future. And you might experience some unexpected business disruption...which could cost you a lot more. For a little while longer even for one person the total cost simply may not be worth it if what you've got 'does the job'.)

I know, but I mean there's 2 new OS's out after XP. And XP is very dated.
This XP on Win7, if it's virtual AND works within in the Win7OS, then how
could drivers that only work on XP still work on this OS? I don't get it.
If those drivers don't work on Win7, then the XP virtual won't make any difference???

Why do you say Windows XP is dated Tam? Microsoft surprisingly still updates it with security fixes. It's faster in most ways that the 2 newer OS's and it's compatible with almost everything out there.

So yeah no DX10, like that has done anyone any good lol. And no DX11 but because it is still non existent than it doesn't really matter.

I just installed Windows 7 Pro yesterday and had a couple of headaches figuring things out, but it was because I was so used to knowing everything by instinct with Windows XP. Well, I was planning on installing the 64bit version so I wouldn't have to re-install it again ocne I buy my 4gb Ram kit but the installation procedure detects your settings and install the according Windows 7 version. Another thing I loved was the incredibly fast installation procedure. One thing that got me dumb was the format option, since I had a pretty much full hard drive with Windows XP on it I reformatted using the option windows 7 gave me and it "did" it in like 4 seconds? Wtf is up with that? Well, it installed windows 7 in around 10 minutes If I'm not mistaken and it was really pretty :)

I had to re-install Street Fighter 4 because it wouldn't run for some reason but all is good now. Also, I tried playing Crysis with DX10 for the first time and I don't know if its the new drivers I downloaded from Nvidia or the fact that is Windows 7 but the images, especially the lightning looked pretty bad.

All in all I'm happy I upgraded to Windows 7 for now. And best of all it was freeeee! And legally of course.?

***EDIT***
For those of you who have X-fi cards and want full functionality out of it then download the Windows 7 X-fi drivers found on creative's websites and then search for Daniel K's support pack 2.0 on google. It's amazing this package, I always had the trouble that the volume panel wasn't included in the websites, but this package includes it all, even some THX certified setup system to calibrate your speakers, updated Creative Console launcher, the freaking Volume Panel!, and other stuff. When you install just cancel whatever you don't need and it will proceed to ask you to install the next thing.

It's got nothing to do with DirectX. Besides, MS's fading out XP as we discuss this.
It's old hat XP. You can get the Console panel for Win7 from Creative. It works on mine.
Unless maybe I installed the Vista version - which still works :)

The second time they hadn't even been installed yet. But the XP service packs were. I kind of wonder what would have happened with testing both without XP being burdened by all the service pack crap?Still I use the same av program for XP and Win7 Vipre

Yes it does. My scanner (LIDE30) has no drivers for Vista or 7. And Canon isn't planning on making any. Nothing I found on line worked. In fact I found nothing on line. But it works fine in XP Mode. Also some 32 bit programs that won't run in x64 work in XP Mode. The whole point of XP Mode was to let enterprise clients continue to be able to run their specialized apps after upgrading their systems even though those apps won't run on Win7.
