Hi,

I have a problem with the powersupply of my System.
I've build my Computer like 2 weeks ago. Until today everything ran smooth. This morning I wanted to check my Mails and tried to turn on my PC but nothing happened. I checked my Powersupply and noticed that the PowerGuard LED of my 850W Enermax Revolution turns red when trying to switch on the PC. I've read the manual and I've checked every connection in my PC. In the end I've disconnected everything. Only the CPU Cooler is connected to the Mainboard. Still nothing. I can see the light and the fan of my CPU Cooler turn on real quick but the PowerGuard LED turns red again and shuts everything down. My board is powered aswell (Asus P6T Deluxe V2). It has a power and reset button on it for test purposes. They are also glowing when switching on the PSU and I'm able to use them to turn on the computer.
Its realy strange because yesterday I used my PC and turned it off just like every other day.

Any ideas?

kind regards

I am gobsmacked that particular PSu is acting up if indeed it is the PSu. That is arguably one of the best PSu's EVER MADE...it really is UBER!!!!

It does not have a AC/DC switch on the back does it.....that could have got knocked. Have you moved the PC at all and you might have dis-lodged the CPU power or motherboard power perhaps....check all the connections again and re sit the GPU.

This might sound stupid but have you checked the wall socket also....and last but not least....

HAVE YOU PAID THE ELECTRICITY BILL?

Heh, well ... I started by unplugging and plugging the power cable. Switching the PSU on and off. Then I opened the case and started to unplug all components until I've only left the CPU and the CPU Cooler connected. There is no AC/DC Switch on the back. Just power on / off.
I've even moved the whole rack to another room to check another wallsocket. Still the same behaviour. When I try to switch on the PC, the PSU shuts it down and lights the red LED "System abnormal, protection circuit activated".
Either the PSU is f**ked or the PSU killed my Board, or both I'm afraid. Sucks....

Could try unplugging all the Molex's and ATX connector and hot wire the PSU to start, will help identify the issue, although being no load on the PSU it may start fine this way even if there is a PSU issue....

It will be quicker for you to google a guide on hot wiring PSU's rather than me explain, essentialy the middle green and black pins/cables on the ATX connector....

Those particular units are PFC Controlled (Power Factor) like mine.
This will auto set for AC/DC have you got a voltmeter you can borrow to
check?

Something's either fooked or shorting causing the unit to shut down the system.
Make sure there's nothing from MoBo touching the tower case. Can't see the PSU
being faulty, it's merely protecting the system by shutting down. Those Enermax PSU's
are pretty damn intelligent.

Good point, never hardwired a PSU so far. Well, the first thing I will try today is my old PSU. If this works I can be sure my new PSU is the one causing the problem. Im also amazed that this new PSU might be defect. However, wouldnt be the first time I have to exchange an Enermax PSU. Its just embarrassing. Spending so much money on a PSU to be sure to get a top notch piece of hardware just to find out its not...

We have 220 V AC in Germany.
It did work for about 2 weeks. It just decided to stop working tonight somehow without changing anything. Ive switched off my PC yesterday and happily pressed the power button this morning to check for mails and whatnot to find out its not working anymore.

Sorry I meant have you got a Volt Meter to check the rails, etc on PSU? Not to
see if it's correct AC/DC voltage.

Ah ok, yes I have a Voltmeter. However, I've just installed my old PSU and its working.
So its the Revolution 85+ thats borked. And off to the Shop to get another one... no more Enermax for me ... its the second one thats defect now.
Any suggestions for a good PSU?

You just got unlucky. I have the Enermax Galaxy 850w.
I've had this since Jan2007, and it's been on an OC'd system, that's on 24/7
ever since. That's almost 3 years. That's the best investment (along with my 8800GTX)
I've ever made for a computer. I'd the Hiper TypeR prior to this, and that was
a good PSU until I installed the 8800 and it blew that PSU.

There's some good ones by Corsair, Tagan, and OCZ. I like OCz.
What you want is a current Tier PSU list.

I still think Enermax is the best yet. It's a beast.

If you want to see if the Enermax psu will turn on then all you need to do is disconnect all of the connectors from all your components... set the psu on the table by itself and with a paper clip, jumper the green wire with the black wire next to it (any black will do) on the 24pin connector and that will signal the psu to turn on. If it does not turn on then the psu is hosed.

But since you this psu is new... take it back for a refund and get either another one of a different one.

As for suggestion to which brand/model...... it all depends on what your local shop/area have on stock or if you will be getting it online.

If it is available to you.... I would highly suggest the Corsair HX850W psu.... IMO this is the best psu out there... or at least one of the very top 4 psu you can buy. The Enermax that you had is a good reputable branded psu... as TAM memtioned... you just got a dud... All other brands will have an ocassional duds as well and are not emmuned to them. But if I had the choice between the Enermax or the Corsair HX psu..... I would hands down picked the Cosair HX.
