Fellow Forum Members,
I'm thinking of buying an LG LED 1080P 47" flat screen TV that is going to double as my computer montior and it is shown in the link below:

http://www.amazon.com/LG-47LH90-47-Inch-Backlit-Infused/dp/B0026NSWSQ

The highest resolution my video card supports is 2560x1600 and this LG flat screen supports a resolution of 1920x1080.

My question to anyone out there relates to whether this LG flat screen is able to support a Windows XP desktop at 2560x1600 resolution? In other words, is the maximum resolution the LG flat screen can support dictated by my PC video card or is it dictated by the max resolution the LG flat screen TV can support?

Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Short answer: The max is dictated by your LCD.

I am able to see 1920 x 1080 on my 32" (1366 x 768) TV, although the picture was very blurry and it didn't scale right.

Indeed this will occur with the 47" LCD also. The picture just isn't as good as a computer LCD for some reason.

Thanks to all for your post. I guess the most important thing I have learned from this post is that a 47" 1080P Home Theater LCD TV Screen is not a good substitute for a computer LCD monitor. My own proof is that yesterday I visited CompUSA, and I saw this LG TV hooked up to a computer. The Windows XP desktop did not look sharp, all of the icons where oversized and blurry. In my opinion it would have looked better if this LG TV screen was somehow able to exceed the 1080P resolution of 1920x1080. But as we now know, it is impossible for a 1080P LCD TV screen to support any resolution beyond 1920x1080.

I think the biggest computer LCD monitor for sale in the market right now has a size of 30". Does anyone out there think the computer LCD monitor manufacturers have any plans of selling 40"-47" LED computer monitors in the near future?

Korny,

Your TV is a HD 720p.... your TV is able to go beyond this but as you have already seen, its not pretty, since 1366x768 is the TV's native res. You need to set your video card to this res and it will scale correctly.

In the past, typically if you try to run a res beyond the native res, you would have gotten an error back saying something to the sort of "out of sync".. this being most true with CRTs. But this may or may not be the same case with computer LCDs.

Binar,

You should be able to run that 47" 1920x1080p TV just fine on your graphics card. Look in the "All the Resolution that is supported" in the drivers tab. Hopefully you should see 1920x1080. Choose this and everything will scale correctly. Remember though... that with a much larger screen size, your distance between your eyes and the screen needs to be much futher than it would be on a computer monitor of this same res but smaller size.

The reason Korny and at the store looks crappy is because they are not using the native resolution of the monitor. At the store like Best Buy, they have one feed with one resolution and it is fed to all of the monitors on display.... guess what.... each of those monitors have different native resolution... plus, the feed is probably the wrong res for all of the monitors... The only way for you to see what 1920x1080 res looks on that LG 47" TV is to hook up a computer or Laptop directly to it using that 1920x1080 native res. As for Korny..... well, he is using a res (1920x1200) that is out of spec with his monitor, hence out of focus/distorted images.

Oh by the way.... if you run a res that is not supported my your computer LCD monitor, it too will look not right as well...

If you're in the market then buy a plasma, I see no reason to buy an LCD of that size for gaming , when plasmas come the same size, are cheaper and looks better. Also, with the Plasmas you can buy later Nvidia Stereoscopic 3D to have a much better gaming experience.

I think anything over 28" to sit right in front of is too big anyways. I'm sitting in front of my 24" and it's almost too big!

Check this monitor out:

It would be the best for all aspects, gaming included - and also has a great price. I've seen 32" LCDs, but they are ridiculously priced at over $1000.

I have tried to use my a650 46"lcd samsung as my pc monitor. It looked very good. The icons looked great as well as the desktop.Games looked even better.(1920x1080) via hdmi cable.

I did notice quite a difference with the hdmi vs the vga. These cables are supposed to have the same quality and resolution but i did see a small difference, especially in movies and games. (my tv has a vga pc connector).
From my friends laptop via vga was horrible though.

That lg should look even better.

One of the main things to look at is how black are the blacks. Seeing as it is led/lcd they should be great.
My problem is that i cant get far enough away from the tv to use it as a monitor. So i just use it for tv/movies or a second monitor for my photoshop and video projects when needed.

Here is the best tv forum around and a link to this tv. I would ask there, or read through the comments.

I have that monitor. An yes its fantastic. I snagged it on sale with Free shipping from Newegg awhile back. I wouldn't want to go any bigger for a Computer screen though. Its about to the point that I have to turn my head. But I do find myself sitting much farther back from my desk. Gaming & Movies are great on it.

Exactly man, I'm sure that monitor is great. I got the second best thing I could find for the best price, being the VH242. I love it also, but I would like the 28" BenQ.

I never said I was USING that resolution, I just said that I am able to. I always have my TV at it's native resolution...

Well yeah.. it is the native resolution lol. I'm just able to bump it up to 1920 x 1080 if I wanted to for some reason.

Meat_Of_Evil,
Thanks for the post. I have looked at Plasmas, and I agree with you that they have a more attractive price and colors. However, the downside to plasmas is that they dissapate a lot of heat. I know this for a fact, because my friend has one and I have noticed that an averaged sized room gets noticeably hot after several hours of having a Plasma TV on. This is why I am considering an LED screen. They operate much cooler when compared to a Plasma TV.
