I am hving a problem with setting up a new HP Officejet 6500 multiprinter. Software sets up fine, but when I get to the point of the instructions telling me to plug in the USB, nothing happens. I tried to detect it with hardware wizard, but that does not 'see" the printer. I tried everything to fix it, even deleting all the files and reinstalling software from scratch... same result upon plugging in USB. Cord is good, I know that. Printer functions as it sees cartridges and prints test page upon cartridge install, etc. I have never had this problem installing a printer. Usually Plug & Play just finds it and installs drivers. Any ideas? Wish I had not purchased online. Maybe just got a lemon?

1. Test that the USB port on your computer (that you are plugging into) is working.
Do not use a USB HUB. Plug a flash disk straight into the USB port you intend to use and see if the flask disk contents can be seen. Also the computer should give a 'did-doonk' sound when you plug in a USB gadget).
2. Test the USB on the printer. Remove the printer end of the lead and make sure that you have the plug oriented correctly.
Make sure the printer is turned on, and plug the computer end of the lead into the known good USB port on the computer (do not use a USB hub). It should make a "did-doonk' sound.
If it does not, try a different USB lead.
If a different USB lead does not produce the sound then you have a' stuffed' USB port.
Take the printer back to where you bought it from and demand an exchange.
Only read the manual as a last resort.
II am a LAN admin who supports about 200 users. I am quite adept with things such as local printer installations. I have never encountered an issue like this with any printer. I usually do not use the software disk that comes with the hardware (as normally the copy of the software and drivers is out of date and you can find more current software on the manufactures web site.) I tried getting this from HP's site and when that was unsuccessful I used the disk. I too ran into the same issue where the box would recognize the printer no problem however when you use the software (which you are forced to do) and you get to the point where it asks you to connect you USB cable, the software doesn't proceed and doesn't see it. I tested each part of this by trying two different (and brand new) USB cables. I also tested the USB ports on the box (all 3 that I tried were good.) I also went a step further and tried the installation on another box, to no avail. In the end, I think you may have received some bad hardware as I have. I had my user return it and get another model. The new printer installed just fine. Probably a bad batch of hardware sent out by HP.
whenever we connect the printer with system using usb cable the printer drivers will automatically installs, if the system is too old or OS usb drivers are out dated then printer will not connect with the system. i such issues we have to manually install the required drivers to system for accessing the printer. for latest drivers go with the below links without any issues. i hope it will helpful to you. http://www.orclage.com/hp-officejet-6500-printer-driver-downlo...ws-8-7-xp/
