Hello!

I know most people hate this kind of posts, but bear with me hahahaha

I need a firewall and/or antivirus, good ones. Last time i checked, the best out there was Zonealarm Extreme security.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

The best firewall is Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. Not to be confused with the standard control-panel Windows Firewall.

As for best antivirus ... I couldn't really say. I used to use NOD32, but imo, the best antivirus is to just not download randoms**t. :_)

If you're looking for a free anti-virus, I'm partial to recommending AVG Free.

Avast! Antivirus is the most secure, it monitors live web/chat/programs i mean hell if you even click on an app that has a potential virus it doesn't even let you see it before its like "omg thiss**ts gonna eat your system delete delete delete!" and it only uses like 15mb's of system resources, updates in the background, and even a full system scan doesn't lag your system at all. Unlike AVG which trashes most computers its on and has no real spyware detection, Kaspersky which is a avast wanna be that's over hyped, and nod32 which is sold only because it says "for gamers on it". There is a few others like Macafe and Norton that I would never touch if it was a last desperate attempt to secure a system because it would let the virus in because its the only thing they were built to do and I think norton gets turned on when it lets a computer crash to one. In any case in a 2 years of using avast I haven't had an infection, its been a dream to all of my computers and i've never had another program stop browser intrusions like this program can.

Just download whatever are in the top 4 of each category/

For anti-viruses I always use any of the "big three":

Avg Free
Avast! Free
Avira Antivir

Avg and Avast to me are equal, in the sense that they seem bloated and do their job perfectly. Avast got a super awesome GUI update on it's latest program update and that alone makes me want to use it more than AVG.

I'm using Avira for now, I always switch between these 3 whenever I get tired of one of them. I must let you know that Avira uses the least memory of the three and according to some test I read a whole ago it has the best heuristics malware detection engine of them all.

Yeap, Avira is still one of the best. And I was impressed with McAfee and Norton, they really have improved over the years.

This site reviews antiviruses and compares them:

Here's the latest report:
http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/ondret/avc_report25.pdf

The top three are:
1. G-Data
2. Avira
3. Panda :O

If you don't have a Quad, and want to play games, don't. It will make your game lag randomly whenever it wants to scan or do sometimng at the background. Might be better with Quad.

It has a big button at the bottom of the app to setup gaming modes. Set that up and there are no slowdowns.

As was said, for AV, the top 3 already listed you can't go too far wrong with.

I'm currently using the latest free edition of AVG, but for some reason its just annoying me. I'm getting a lot of game server disconnects since I installed it :(

So, may just jump on the Avira or Avast! bandwagon later on.

For a firewall - I just use the standard Windows built in one. Sure, its not brilliant, but it does enough for what I need.

For desktops, I agree -- if you've got a good perimeter firewall running on your router, you won't need software firewalls on your machines behind it (unless you want to block outbound per-process or something more complicated).

But for laptops, that you'll take with you and possibly connect to "questionable" wireless networks, you'll definitely want a good software firewall.

I'm currently using the free versions of Avast and Zonealarm on my primary Win7 setup and have not had any problems. Their both free so give them a try and tell us what you think.

How do you know those trojans were already there? Because it's part of Panda's process
to "find" a few trojans that your last AV couldn't find. Hmm. The you'll be happy this new
AV has found trojans your last AV coudn't find, and you'll stick with your new one. Clever eh!
New AV = Found some "placebo" trojans and I get BUSINESS!

....I'm back, but only as a part-timer... :)

Well, since they were all in torrent files... There were a few false positives but they were just marked as suspicious.

Hi all, I think McAfee is the best in today market. McAfee VirusScan Plus is an ideal candidate for those seeking an antivirus/firewall combination without all the bloat of traditional Internet security suites. McAfee VirusScan Plus makes an easy job of removing adware and spyware, something not all antivirus products deliver. SiteAdvisor service is including, helping to guard against malicious websites.
