Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 also had the highest scores in detection and removal of existing malware and for overall usability and performance.

Avira AntiVir Personal – FREE Antivirus is a highly reliable and user friendly free antivirus solution. It continually and quickly scans your system for malicious programs such as viruses, backdoor programs, Trojans, hoaxes, worms, dialers etc.

Why has not anyone mentioned Vipre from Sunbelt Software? Very good product, small footprint, very easy to use. Has caught several items that my other PC with another product did NOT catch :)

Here's a recent Win7 anti-malware evaluation from av-test.org
Note that it's importnat to be sure you are looking at the correct "Tab" of information.
For example, [/b]"2011/Q1-Windows7" as the results change depending on the OS and the time of the evaluations.

Also whether you are specifically interested in NON-freeware versions, or if you're looking for freeware versions only.
A total of 22 anti-malware products were reviewed by us during the 1st quarter of 2011 (Win7). 17 products have fulfilled our requirements in the categories protection, repair and usability and have therefore received an AV-Test certificate.
Note that within the report, you can dynamically have the results listed in rank-order depending on your focus by category:
-Protection
-Repair
-Usability

The reports can be found here.
http://www.av-test.org/certifications.php
Interestingly, they plan an evaluation for July 2011...for WinXP platforms![/quote]

Freeware-specific Review
AntiVir Personal Edition Classic came out on top. in an older about.com review piece claiming value-add on 3 specific freeware evaluations based on the AV-Test evaluations, where
This review looks at three free antivirus solutions: AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic, AVAST 4 Home Edition, and AVG Free Edition.
Based on the versions of the programs listed, it would not seem to have included Win7. And as noted earlier, ratings can change dramatically over time. More info on that freeware review at:

The best anti-virus for Win7 is Kaspersky it is completely compatible with Windows 7, it also has integrated support for the new features and functions of Windows 7. If you’re using Windows 7 you can also take advantage of the unique Kaspersky Desktop Gadget.

I've heard great things about Microsoft Security Essentials. I know, it has the word Microsoft in it but try it out.

After 3 years on Win7 haven't had one problem. Using Panda Cloud (freeware edition), and Windows Defender and Windows Firewall, both set at factory defaults. Firefox is default browser. Also still using Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster as second level protection.

And as always is the case, it seems to matter less on how you browse as on where you browse that will increase or decrease your chances of your PC getting sick.
