My Dell Vostro 1500's laptop battery is no longer getting charged by my Dell branded AC adapter but it still powers the laptop with the battery removed. I have 2 AC adapters (both Dell branded) and the first one powers the laptop AND charges the battery fine. But, yesterday the good adapter's cables got too frayed and no longer works. My 2nd adapter, also thru Dell can power the laptop fine but for some reason the Dell BIOS doesn't recognize the AC adapter. It says unknown adapter or something like that. I don't see this being a power supply issue or a messed up solder point since my first AC adapter worked fine. The Dell forums aren't working for some reason and my warranty ended in September obviously. Anyone have any experience with this? I am using XP and using a dated BIOS and have not upgraded it, but I don't know if that will help.

It seems like the most expedient option would be to either repair the frayed cable or find someone who can do it for you. Depending on the nature of the "fraying" and where it is located, this could be the most simple and fastest fix. Most hobbyists I know would be willing to attempt to fix it for free, a six-pack, or a pizza and cola.

It might also be possible to replace the "frayed" cable with the cable from the "working" adapter. However, I haven't researched how Dell implemented any "power adapter ID" scheme (and I'd assume it could evolve depending on model year). The adapter ID issue might be because of a problem with the "working" adapter's cable (or jack), and not internal to the power adapter itself. So replacing the "frayed" cable with the cable from the "working" adapter might simply create another adapter that runs the laptop but still doesn't charge the battery.

edit to add:
I did find this item re: Dell power adapter ID "chip" failures
http://www.laptop-junction.com/toast/content/dell-ac-power-ada...-chip-died
If we assume the "working" adapter isn't recognized because of an ID chip failure, then replacing the "frayed" cable with the cable from the "working" adapter would likely work. However, be sure that whomever does the work follows appropriate ESD protocols while handling and soldering the cables and connections.
(by the way, the implementation of the ID chip in these power adapters seems almost guaranteed to see increased vulnerability due to ESD "zaps" when one touches the end of the adapter cable in low-humidity conditions)

it may just be a bug that you can remedy by restarting your computer or perhaps you need to reset the PRAM.

happened to my Dell 1545 once. I unplugged the power cord, left the notebook running on battery for ~5 minutes and plugged the power back in. It started to charge and problem solved!

If the problem still exsit, i suggest you buy a new one and this link may help you.

How old is your laptop battery. Maybe it's the battery but not the ac adapter that caused this problem.

Escuse me my English. I write from Brazil. I've a Vostro 1400 with the same problem. The solution is at BIOS turn to enabled in ac power management advisors, or something else.

It's very strange because seems the inverse of the reality. If the advisors is off, you receive a advisor, "is connectes, but no baterry charge", if you turn it to "enables", all became OK. For me given results.
Bye.

i have Dell Vostro 1500 i had the charging problem after 5 years after i bought it
After this problem i thought my battery died thats why i purchased battery then i saw its not about battery but my charger was working at least i saw the green led light on the charger which shows you charger is working Yes that is mistake Even you see the light on charger it could be defective My charger was giving wrong voltages so it wasnt charge my battery It gives you enough voltage for run the laptop but No Charges Then i found 2 charger one is replacement charger not original the other charger is original I pluged the both chargers and i saw both of them worked So with my experience i highly recommend you to buy Charger which is around 10 20 bucks on internet BY THE WAY IF you call the Dell support like me you could get charged more than 100 bucks They told me my laptop had software problem so they can fix it they installed pc care software and showed me some bs and asked me money do not accept that your problem is not software problem if you cant charge your laptop so i didnt pay them thank god
