Hi,

I have seen a similar problem to mine posted on here, however, it became a mass discussion with everyone adding their own variant and in the end, I'm not really sure how the problem (which turned into about 20 problems with the additional people) was actually solved.

The thread was http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/71940/

Anyway, on my Laptop, all browsers stop loading, or should I say, they get stuck whilst loading and it takes a restart to get them working again.

The internet connection remains throughout - the email still works and the connection is fine and I can close the browsers (they don't get stuck in task manager etc.), though if I close and try to re-open a browser again, then it won't open.

I use Firefox exclusively, though IE is still installed on there and initially when it started a couple of weeks back, I thought the problem was Firefox, so I decided to install Google Chrome but the problem affects all of them.

There's nothing that really stands out, that I have done since the problem began to cause this.

My Laptop is networked to my PC and the browsers (Firefox) on my PC work fine.

That said, my PC encounters problems when I use the Windows update which is what I did a couple of weeks back and I had to system restore a couple of times before giving up on updating altogether - could this be a cause?

Anyway, I just want to sort the browser issue out on my Laptop as it's driving me nuts, any help would be appreciated.

Well it appears that people in that thread seemed to find resolution in making changes with their installation of Zone Alarm. Do you have Zone Alarm installed?

I don't have Zone Alarm. I did briefly install it on my PC but removed it when I had all the problems after the Windows update as I wasn't sure of the cause initially.

It didn't affect browsing on my PC though.

What OS and SP is installed on your PC, and the same for your laptop?

EXACTLY how are they networked? (software and hardware)

OS on both laptop and PC are Vista 32 bit and neither have a SP.

I have Sky Broadband, so I have a Netgear router (exclusively for Sky) which is a DG834GT but I'm not sure what software I use - it came with an 'easy set-up' disk from Sky - how can I tell?

If I look under 'Network', I see a 'Netgear DG834GT Router' icon - is that the software or a shortcut for the hardware?

I discovered something else yesterday which may be a cause of the problem.

I contacted Netgear support and am still awaiting their response but I'll share it with you too.

I got an iPhone yesterday and I wanted to network that as well.

I can't remember my password, so to retrieve it, I logged into my router login page (192.168.0.1) but 'Wireless Settings' was completely missing - the page was blank.

Now obviously, the network is still working, so I don't know (if at all) how much of a problem this is and/or if this is connected - I'm waiting on Netgear but it could be a factor.

Updating to the latest Vista service pack on the computers would be a start. I always suggest making image backups of your system disks beforehand just in case the SP causes other problems. With an image backup you can always go back to exactly the way things were.

Not having installed the latest service packs also leaves you more exposed to malware and network intrusion. So, even if it doesn't resolve the problem it's a good thing to do.

Just so you both are aware of somewhat similar situations. Both of you are using Netgear DG834G.

I'm afraid to do a Windows update as one of the security updates slows my computer so much and another stops me from having any internet connection.

I never see SP1 or 2 in Windows update and from what I gather, Windows don't let you download it if they think your PC may suffer, so I guess that's why I've never had it.

I have had a look at the stand alone SP1 but Windows strongly advise not to download for 1 PC.

I stopped the Windows updates almost a year ago - since it kept crashing my PC, now there's a ton of them so I wouldn't know which was affecting me unless I did them one by one.

I totally forgot the reason why I had stopped dl them, so I did 3 weeks back and sure enough, my PC hardly worked afterwards - I had to system restore.

Look in that linked thread. Meats Of Evil posted something that may help you out.

The only similarity between myself and the other guy are that we both use a Sky DG834G router.

He cannot connect his Realtek device and is having problems connecting it to his Sky router, whereas I have full connectivity from my router, the problem I am having is my browsers stop loading on my laptop, though the connection is still there - I can still check emails etc. I just can't browse the internet.

A Sky DG834G router btw, is specially customised for Sky and there's no new firmware - it's as is.

I was told the following by Netgear:

"please note that routers provided by SKY broadband come with a SKY customized firmware (a software that defines the working of the router) and which cannot be changed".

As additional information, I mentioned that I couldn't access the 'wireless settings' from my router login page and also that I cannot upgrade to SP1 or SP2.

That's it in a nutshell and as I mentioned at the start of the post, my problem is more like the link I gave, rather than Luke Brown's problem, though unlike the other post I mentioned (at the start) - I don't have Zone Alarm installed so that isn't the problem like it was for them.

However, that said - I did briefly install ZA but I uninstalled it after a day (about 3 weeks ago), so possibly there may be some remnants of it on my system but that was on my PC and not the laptop where I am experiencing problems.

I have to take a bit of exception to your conclusion from my earlier post. The "only similarity" is not just the router. The "somewhat similar" situation I alluded to are you both can use and have used the router for other purposes. It's for a different, but single specific situation in both your cases that you appear to have connectivity problems with the router or its software/firmware/drivers support. Your connectivity problem is more constrained than Luke's, but it is still a facet of a connectivity problem.

There ultimately may be different solutions but I felt there were enough similarities that you should both be aware of the work being done in both threads...it might help either one of you or both of you come to a faster solution by being aware of the information provided by HWA'ers in one thread that for various reasons may not appear in the other.

I forgot to mention that he uses a completely different OS too but I will keep an eye on his thread as maybe I will find someone or something that can help get my browsers working on his thread if and when they fix his network card.

Thanks for the help.
