Hey Y'all,

I wanted to share with you my mobile audio upgrade done on my 94' Miata. Way back in 94, I had chucked the stock head unit and installed an aftermarket head unit. I installed a Kenwood with a cassette player with an external 10-disc cd changer. Well......... it's been 16yrs later..... with a few technological changes along the way.... I thought it would be nice to do an upgrade to the audio in my Miata. The Kenwood unit still works great but its time for a change.

Since I didnt want to get too deep into my wallet for a new head unit and considering that it is going into a convertable, i.e. better chance of the new unit sprouting legs..... I kept the cost down to just under 300.00 bucks... So the unit I installed is a Power Acoustic PTID-7350NR. Surprisingly, this unit has ALOT of features for the price point. I would have liked to install one from Kenwood or Pioneer..... but that would have meant a price point at and above 500.00. The main type of unit i wanted had to be a DVD video with 7" screen and double din for starters.... The unit I ended up getting has a 7" screen, double din, DVD movies, mp3, mpeg, avi, SD card input, USB input, video/audio out, 2 x video/audio in, rear camera input, nav ready, TV ready, etc.....

Here are some pics of the install -

Very nice ... so you can watch movies with your noise-cancelling headphones while you're driving? ^_^

Hahahahaha, in all seriousness, driving with headphones can be VERY dangerous. You can't hear people honking at you if you are in a dangerous situation, and you can't hear the police/ambulance/firetruck sirens. Just to name a few.

that looks VERY nice. How did you make the custom center console opening for it?

Thanks fellas !!!

@ McFly,

Absolutely !! :P

@ Doc,

After the double din unit was mounted...

I placed the center console's bezel in place to get a gauge of the gap around the head unit....

I then measure the gap at all sides around the unit to the opening in the console's bezel....

Purchased a sheet of aluminum from Home Depot

Then I drew all the necessary measurements needed for the opening needed for the head unit, surface area needed to fill the gap, and then the surface area needed to be used for mounting it to the center console.

Double, triple, and quadruple checked all measurements before cutting.....

I cut the most outside measurements..

Then I used multiple small clamps and a steel straight edge to make the bends. What I did was use the clamps to clamp a 1/4" steel straight edge to the lines that I need to make the bends, then I would hammer the bend along the straight edge. Working from inside bends going to the outside bends.

Once all the bends were done, test fit it into the opening of the center console's bezel and making any adjustments.

After a good fitment into the center console's bezel... I proceeded to cut the inside opening that goes around the head unit. To do this, I used a dremel and cutting disc. Gotta have a steady hand for this...

Once cut... used a file to smooth the lines...

Tested fitted many times making sure that the movement of the display opening and closing is not interfering with the trim. Filing more as needed.

Once I was satified with the trim's fitment.... I washed it up and painted it...

If I had to do this all over again.... I would consider power coating the trim instead of painting it... The powder coating would be alot more durable than paint. Unfortunately I would need to send it off for powder coating as I dont have the necessary stuff to do it. oh well.....

After the cut

Dude a picture of the whole car would've been nice. From the looks of it you have taken a lot of care, the seats and the dashboard look like new!

Also, I hope you don't plan to watch movies while you're on traffic lol nothing spells troble like distraction.

Audio upgrade?! Video you mean?

Meats, do you know why G.G. went through all that trouble for a video player in his Mazda convertible? Very simple, so he can watch porn video on the go, while playing with his stick shift. XD

Meats..... ok... here you go....

My Miata is a 94'. I purchased her brand new back in July 1994. Drove of the lot with 13miles on the odo. It will be 16yrs old this coming July. Currently, the odo reads 51,000 miles. It's been garage from day 1 and it is my secondary car. So that means it goes out only on pleasure drives. I do try to keep her clean and kept up. She's not perfect, but perfect as can be for a 16yr old vehicle. Oh by the way, the paint on her is ORIGINAL. Never been repainted. What you see in the photo is what it actually is in person.

Are those after-market wheels? What size are they? Looks like 17" or 18" to me.

>> Re: GG's mobile audio upgrade
yes, they are aftermarket wheels.

The originals were 14" x 6" with 185/60 tires.

Then a couple of years later, I moved up to a set of 15"x7" Moda R1 wheels with Nitto 195/50 tires

Today I have -

wheels are 16" x 7.5" w/40mm offset. They are called MIM Venezia. The wheels are .5" wider than normal.

The tires are General Exclaim UHP 205/45zr16.

Oh... to add, the car has been lowered by .5" via aftermarket Konis shocks. I also have aftermarket front and rear (larger) sway bars.

Nice! Your Z rated tires (speed rating W), can go max 168mph (270 km/h). Are you planning to go that fast?! ;)

I had up my VW from 14" steel to 15" alloy, up width from 195 to 205mm. Much better traction that way. 14" just don't cut it for cars any more, too small. Most cars have 15" wheels or more nowadays. And I hate plastic hub caps! I can't believe they still sell $18k+ cars with those today.

I always like to see people who care about what they own. That car of yours is a prime example. Especially under the hood.

After reading this thread I just thought....my PC costs more than my car...damn I just f**ed that up...

Goddamn Nice car G.G.

I'd like to add a comment: You have preserved that car to the point of being a showroom car.

I bought my 2001 Ford Focus SE in 2007 with 98,000 miles.

3 years later my car has 175,000 miles.

Yeah, not my secondary car as you can see. ;)

Dude GG what sucks is the American Focus is horrible when compared to the Euro models.

Just check the Focus RS. Not even sold in the US.

>:

For me personally, I always dream about a Focus Cosworth or this:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0f/TC2000_Ford..._Focus.jpg

Focus TC2000 (Argentina's 2000cc Touring Cars league)

All cars are about 300hp with N/A induction with tight aerodynamic and engine regulations.

others in this league include Civics, Chevy Astras, Renault Meganes, VW Polos, etc.

;) drool
