I'm using an Inspiron 1521, which I believe is the 15" version of the 1721. When the battery light goes pink/purple, it means that the battery is very low, and is either about to shut off or simply can't turn back on.

Your charger or your power input might be busted. :~

I bet is the charger itself. My brothers both have Dells and both chargers have failed. You can buy generic ones on eBay very cheap and if you use them right they will last a lot.

Remember to not leave it connected to the laptop overnight. Disconnect when battery is fully charged, including from the power socket.

Everything I write is Sarcasm.
