Sounds like a possible W21/Virut of the Virus families. This Virus attacks everything and
anything that contains an .exe file and corrupts them. There is Virut removal tools out there,
but once the .exe file's been attacked, there's pretty much nothing you can do. You'll
eventually get rid of the Virus (if you know how to do it) but once that's gone, you're left
with one hell of a mess for an OS that's barely (if you're lucky) able to do a simple task.

If you decide to do a fresh installtion, then DO NOT dump any back up onto the new
installation, or you'll end up with the same problem. You can scan the back up drives
from a Virtual or from Safemode for any infections.

try scanning in safe mode to see if it helps. Use any of these antiviruses from a USB flash drive also to see if you can run them.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_clamwin/
http://www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus/
http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/
http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

If none of those work then use the ultimate boot cd, it has a virus removal tool that it should work since you're using it before windows even starts so the virus has no chance of acting.

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
Burn it to a cd, then just insert it and restart, press any key if asked and then when on the menu go to others and choose AVIRA AntiVir Rescue System that should hopefully do the job.

However I would suggest reformatting the drive, unless of course you have any valuable information you need to back up then try removing the virus do the backup and reformat. Then use any of the above antiviruses they're free so you'll never need to pay.

Meats, those don't work.
You will eventually clean it, but the OS and software, registry, et al is nuked!
How can you expect to install a program on an already fooked OS??

This is the tool: http://free.avg.com/gb-en/win32-virut

It is NOT an exe file, and does work. Read the instructions.

AVG is crapware IMHO.

What I have done lately to remove this bug, is I boot in safe mode, install Avast, and when it asks for a boot time scan, say yes, it takes a while but erases infected exes before it even gets into windows.

It's not an AVG link for softwareI have posted. It's a Virut removal tool made by AVG which
does to the job. Once this Virus has been let loose on a system, there's no turning back.

I know Tam, I was referring to Meats of Evil Men about all the A/Vs post.

However AVG has been really unreliable lately as I have seen it fail on a lot of customers' PCs, mind you updated all the way. I don't know what's up with it.

Ah ok. The AVG Virut is a bootscan non exe file also. That's a good removal tool.

If you can't solve your problem you have to take help from a technician.
