HDMI Output and 5.1 sound? haaaaaalp

So i am building a home theater pc, well, i've actually built one, but failed. big whoop.

Where i failed is that I can't get video and sound working, so I've come down to just wanting something easy and simple, what i want is to output from my pc video and sound via hdmi, like a regular dvd/blu player.

I have a 4870 and a bluraydisc player, i don't really care for the bluray cdrom drive, i'm more into downloading movies and then watching them on my tv.

So if anybody out there knows or has done it before, i'd love your advice.

What vid card can i use that will output HDMI AND 5.1 HIGHDEF dolby sound?

so far i haven't gotten my 4870 to output more than mono sound, so i gave up on that.

I don't know much on this subject, but the people on the forum listed would know a lot. Just be sure to read the stickies!

As far as i know ati uses its own audio encoder, rather then your mobo on board sound. Nvidia uses the mobo on sound for there hdmi but uou have to connect a wire from your mobo to your video card..

I have never bothered to see if my nvidia uses more then stereo via hdmi as i just use my bd player. When i have media to play i just use the usb stick on the bd player. Or if need be i have the coax/optical out to my reciever via my mobo.

But if you only get mono and you have stereo + on your source file. I would think it is a setting in the ati control panel.

Almost any videocard can output video over HDMI now, if it has a DVI on the back, just get a DVI-to-HDMI converter and it will do it. Radeon 3450 can do it, even the 8800GT.

To output the sound over HDMI you're gonna need something like Auzen X-Fi HomeTheater 7.1. Plug your HDMI video into the soundcard, it will then mix that video with DD Tru HD or DTS Master, and output it via the HDMI out that you can then plug into your receiver or straight into the TV.
