So I caught some kind of malware today and that's the problem I've been having ever since. As soon as it happened I ran Malwarebytes, spybot, and Avast. I also ran Windows defender for good measure even though it's useless.

I found some malware and deleted them with Malwarebytes and it said that it fixed the registry, but I still have the update icon in the bottom left corner saying Windows can't check for updates. I've tried updating manually and it doesn't give me any error code. It just gives me that red X and allows me to keep trying to check for updates with no success.

Can anyone help me out with this?

Thanks in advance.

Windows Vista Ultimate x64 and I've tried System Restore. Unfortunately that didn't help.

Have you tried going online to the Microsoft Update website and downloading them from your browser, the Windows Update may have become corrupt.

The Windows Update site doesn't work with Vista. It just tells you to use the built in updater in Vista which isn't working. Does anyone else have any ideas or suggestions on how to fix this?

Yeah, I've tried that a couple times. Takes about 30 minutes and never fixes the problem unfortunately.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I'm really surprised that nothing seems to be fixing this.

I had this problem years a go with xp.
My problem was not just with the updater, it was also with IE. I assume that you use a real browser and may not have tried IE as a browser. If you haven't give that a try. also it seems odd, but updating or installing IE may fix the problem.

With Vista you can't update through the Windows Update website. This is what comes up when I go to the Windows Update site even with IE (which as you guessed, I never really use).

"Use your Start menu to check for updates

Windows Update is included in Control Panel. In the future, to check for updates (or if this webpage doesn’t open Windows Update automatically):

Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Windows Update.

Go to Control Panel and go to Program and Features. On the left side under Tasks click on Installed updates now expand the whole windows and look for the date in which you started having the problems, then delete all updates with that date.

Now since you say that any of those programs didn't catch anything then try Hijack This, it's an oldie but it still works excellently. http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/

When installed run it with the option of "scan and save a logfile" then use any of these websites to verify which of the results you need to delete.

Just copy and paste the results from the logfile and compare what is good and bad. After that restart and try using the update.

Try the built-in Windows troubleshooter to help with Windows Updates: Click the Start button > click Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under System and Security, click Fix problems with Windows Update.

Reading through this may help as well - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Understanding-Wind...-updating.

Thanks for the advice Sofia, but I did that multiple times and it accomplished nothing. It doesn't matter though. That was almost a year ago. My computer is running Windows 7 now and I doubt I'll ever be using Vista again.

To do a system restore type "System Restore" in the start menu. It will guide you through the rest. System restore uninstalls everything installed from the date you restore back to, and changes all settings back to that date to.
