The fan broke on this 6600GT video card. All I have laying around is a generic 1.5"x1.5" passive heat sink. Do you think it will afford me enough cooling? I'm lucky it didn't burn up. I'm just concerned about the GPU. Got enough h.s.'s to cover the memory.

What is it made of? Copper or aluminum?

It's aluminum.

Put a marshmellow on top of the heatsink, if it melts then you'll know it's not safe for the gpu. Just have a look once in a while inside or keep your nose sharp.

OR...you can use a temp monitoring program. :P

Well what I'm afraid is, if it gets too hot it might damage the chip even before you get into Windows to use the monitoring program. An infrared sensor is the best, so you can pull the plug immediately when it gets dangerously hot.

^ hehehe ^

My experience of most computer componants is that not many manufacturers ever stick something on that's not necessary; they naturally want to do it as cheap as possible to maximise their profits in a cut-throat business, so if there was a fan there before, it's probably there for a reason.

You might get away with one of those 'spare slot' cooling fans - you know the sort I mean? It covers a spare IO slot in the back of the case and draws air in to cool the card in the slot next to it. Could be a cheap alternative.

I would just underline the point already made about the GPU catostrophically failing before any monitoring warned you :(

Have you considered trawling auction/classified advert sites for a failed card of the same model? Might be able to transplant the fan off that if they're only after a couple of quid for it.

Payton, mys**tty 7300GS has a tiny aluminum heatsink and a 1 inch wide fan which doesnt work.

How I fixed it was easy, I hung a regular fan (10 or 8cm, can't remember) over the heatsink and my temps stay at around 50C, which I think is good, and not that I do any gaming.

The fan just hovers on the bottom of the GPU attached via those little metal strings that come with bread plastic bags. :)

There's also some PCI fans that you connect beneath the card that exhaust air into the video card.

Have you seen the prices for a decent AGP card? It's the same price as 9800GT pci express cards. I need to just dump all these old computers. My room is getting crowded.
