My sister just bought a new laptop made by MSI. I have never seen a laptop made by them and I am wondering if they are any good as far as quality and customer support goes. I wanted her to get an Acer only because Acer bought Gateway and I liked Gateway.

Companies like Dell, HP, and Apple have their laptops manufactured by companies such as Foxconn, Asustek, Clevo, etc. MSI, Asus, among others actually manufacturer their own laptops in their own factories. Generally they are kinda generic looking, but usually pack a lot of power for the money. Sometimes they are heavy and the casing is cheap and poorly designed. Support for the laptop might be lacking, however if your good with computers and can support yourself then a laptop built by MSI will provide a lot of performance for your money.

Adam's right. MSI makes and sells barebone laptops, in addition to their own line of consumer laptop products. I almost consider buying a MSI laptop at one point, but never materialized. Same as Adam said, you can get more hardware for lesser money with brands like MSI, Acer, Asus, etc. That is with sacrifice a little bit in support and quality, but if you're a tech head, you won't mind that.

Well that is why her MSI laptop had so much better specs than every other laptop with the same price. I thought it might be because it had inferior parts or something. I am perfectly capable of solving any problems she runs into so customer support isn't really an issue as long as I am around. And you're right; the laptop does look very generic. It's almost cool looking it's so generic.

I'm not sure about MSI. But I do know that ASUS makes pretty decent machines under their name. However if you want quality and durability in a manufacturer's name, I'd go with Clevo. Support isn't there as much, but the hardware is rock solid.

.
Even if the hardware quality and specs are decent, I'd be very attentive regarding firmware and software support for given laptop model.

Before purchasing, I'd skim their website to see how well they support their downloads and deal with fora (if they host any) on that model, or similar models if that particular one is too new to have much history. I'd look at not only whether they respond to issues, but how quickly they respond. Plus, it's usually easy to tell when a "support" person hasn't really read the user's post.

I'd also try to see if they quickly drop support of models that don't do well. It's quite frustrating to buy a computer only to have the manufacturer's website basically "disappear" the model or a model series after anything less than 3 years (personally, I'd prefer to see at least 5 years support histories, but consumers seem to be ever more accepting of short product life-spans. Apparently, a lot of people have money to burn.)

What retailer do you recommend that carries these brands? I like to kick the tires, so to speak, before buying. Locally there's a Best Buy & not far is a TigerDirect, but someone here posted a warning about TD. Are there other sources? TIA! Hugs ~ Moms
