VPS like the one you got are great if you don't mind getting down and dirty with administration - and of course getting all the benefits. Certainly it gives you plenty more possibilities than a typical locked-down shared hosting solution.
My home setup; coincidently I just added a Cobalt Raq XTR today for a dedicated mail server and a rather suave Dell PowerEdge server that has no specific purpose but I'm thinking MySQL for hair brained scheme I have yet to devise..... there's also a lot more wires trailing around since that was taken lol.
