Hi,

I recently purchased a laptop and hooked up my Seagate HDD to access different files on there (music and videos mainly). The HDD was originally connected to my desktop. Both systems run Win7 Professional 64-bit.

However, on the laptop, there are some files (it seems to be older ones) that I can't run from the hard drive. I have to copy them to my actual hard drive in order to run them. Trying to rename one of these files yields "File Access Denied: You'll need to provide administrator permission to rename this file" even though I only have one account on here which is the admin.

Is there any way just to do a clean wipe of the security restrictions so I don't have to worry about this?

EDIT: I tried taking ownership of the drive and all its contents but the problem still persists.

Is this just a matter of uac (user account control)?

If so, just boot from the laptop hdd and reset the settings, or if you are running the program from an icon, just right click on it and run as administrator.

Or am i misunderstanding what you are saying?

Try to run "chckdsk x: /f", without the quotemarks and where x is the drive. I think you have to do it in Safe Mode MSdos [restart, press F8, go for "safe-mode with command prompt"], or when in XP mode: right-click on drive X, open Properties
