Just got one of these yesterday, it's an Android phone running 2.1 (Eclair) and I'm really enjoying the Swype keyboard that comes with it which lets you slide over the keys versus having to tap in each key. Typings**t is loads faster than anything else I've used on a phone. There's also voice to text which I'm thinking will be useful for while I'm driving. The LED for the camera flash is extremely bright, I found a good flashlight app (TorchLED) which has a widget to toggle it on and off. I'm still looking for more apps to toy around with. So far I do have a few gripes though...

Software side: No matter what I set the display timeout to, it always dims out after about 10-15 seconds unless an app is forcing it otherwise. It's really annoying. Another minor thing is that the dedicated touch sensitive "buttons" at the bottom dim out and there is no setting to change this what-so-ever. I'm stuck on Android 2.1 until probably mid-January when supposedly they're going to roll out 2.2. I don't see why they don't just skip to 2.3 though at this point.

Hardware side: The volume button is one thing and rattles. For something that normally retails for $600 (I was able to get mine for free this week, U.S. Cellular had a thing going on), it's a wtf issue. Other than this, no real complaints here.

Personally I dislike the Galaxy phones.... wont go into reasons but HTC just physically "feels" nicer to hold IMHO.

But seriously welcome to a higher level of enlightenment lol Android ftw!

Might I suggest checking out either of the below for some custom ROMs personally I found Cyanogen 5 mod unstable, I've been using Modaco's roms for maybe 6~ months and found them to be top notch. You should be able to find a copy of 2.2 floating around there too.

Also the below if you have no ethics code ;) is down at the moment but its a good place to "try" software before buying it and all that spiel. I'll vouch for its safety if you use a few brain cells lol.

Having voices in your head is normal. Listening to them, common. Arguing, acceptable. However, when you lose the argument, you're in trouble.

Can you disable the Samsung theme and use the stock Android theme?

Got an Android A855 now.The Android 2.2.1 Froyo FRG83D OS seems great so far with Flash 10.1.

I had a few custom roms but went back to default after a while the phone does more than i need stock.

The Galaxy S is on my list of phone's to check out when my contract with Version comes to an end in Sept/2011

Yeah, I know what you mean about the build. I was checking out the HTC Desire but the SAMOLED won me over. Explain this whole ROM thing for me I assume I have to root the phone to do that? Also thanks for the site, I'm sure it'll come in handy.

I don't think so. If they do they don't make it easy anyways if you know what I mean.

Anybody have preferences on browsers? The stock is crap, It's preventing me from downloading certain attachments and I know it's slow. I've downloaded Skyfire, XScope, and Dolphin Mini. Just wondering if there's any others I should check out.

Looks like it's down. Know of any alternatives?

Did you end up getting what you wanted McFly?

Wow. I haven't been paying attention to the whole ereader thing that much so I didn't even know the Nook Color existed, nor that it used Android lol. That's pretty cool. If you don't like the default browser, give xScope 6 a shot. It's faster at rendering pages and it seems like the developer is pretty good at taking suggestions. The trial version just has "trial" in the bottom right corner, and that's the only difference from the full version.

The dev has no official website, but his "home" is on androidforums.com

Yeah, I actually just came across that today and was kinda p**sed. I'm afraid of rooting my phone right now because I'd like to know how to create my own ROM first because when I do root it, I want to uninstall a bunch ofs**t. I'm not going to bother with any of it though until 2.2 finally comes out officially because apparently all of the unofficial builds for the Mesmerize are unstable, and Fascinate builds on it have a high chance of bricking it.

So... last night I got impatient and rooted my phone, then installed the paid version of Titanium Backup to freeze the bloatware and I'm now using about 50-75 less MB of RAM and paging through the home screen is much quicker. Good stuff. Ad Free is a nice app I found along the way.

384MB according to Samsung's website and I can only see 325MB so I'm thinking part of that is going to video memory. It kinda p**ses me off though because the other Galaxy S phones have 512MB. The whole Galaxy S line is a bit fragmented actually. Here's the wiki for details if you're curious: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S#Variants

For reference, stock it was always hovering around 250MB used after running for a while and now it's usually closer to 200MB and if I do a kill all apps in ATM I can get it down to 150MB but it doesn't last for long.

There are some apps like Voice Commands that even though I froze them using Titanium Backup, they keep starting up. Also I haven't frozen Movie Player, but it keeps starting up every now and then even though I'm not accessing it which is just annoying. None of it is really getting in the way of what I'm doing at this point, but I still think it's stupid that it's running for no reason.

I was going to message you about it but figured you'd seen it already lol. I wish my phone has that kind of developer support.

My camera flash/flashlight seems to have stopped working. Time to unroot & make a warranty claim at the US Cellular store...
