What do you mean by base clock? Is that the FSB or something new to these i series processors

On the Sandy Bridge CPU's, Intel has decided to change from using the term 'multiplier' to 'clock bin'.

Essentially its just the CPU multi though. (i.e FSB (100) x Clock bin (i.e 40x) = 4Ghz

Fine then, I will wait for bulldozer and any related shakeups.

The 2400 is still a very decent CPU. Faster than pretty much any other quad from AMD or non-sandy Intel at stock.

It can only be overclocked a little, but if that's what will fit in your budget, go for it.

It's the hard drives that drag the scores down I think. Unless you are running SSD's or 15K RPM screamers your stock SATAII drives will drag you down into the high 5's. Then again I just may be too far back from the cutting edge. But the lowest score device will determine your over all score.I'm at 7.0, 7.0, 7.5, 7.5, 5.9 and the total base score is 5.9

Don't even bother lookign at the windows index.

Its the most stupid benchmark for a PC's performance. Especially as how a HDD (the component with the smallest effect on overall performance) can ruin your score and give you an index of its own score.

The individual scores should be weighted.

Here's a good idea - we'll weight the scores out of 100.

CPU - 30, Graphics - 15, Gaming graphics - 30, Ram - 15, HDD - 10

I could even be more extreme with the weightings.

My Windows index is 5.9 - as determined by the HDD score.

Here are my scores:
CPU - 7.2, Mem - 7.6, Gfx - 7.5, Gaming gfx 7.5, HDD - 5.9

If we use the weightings above in this formula:
((CPU x 30)+(mem x 15)+(Gfx x 15)+(Gaming x 30)+(HDD x 10)) / 100

I then get a score of 7.3 - much more representative of my machines actual performance.

Just noticed, the windows index score, shows my GTX570 as DirectX 10....
