Just got done with reinstalling Win7 (this time 64 bit) after yesterday morning, my previous install had enough of me trying to fix all of the registry permission issues I was having. I did a blanket command for the entire registry to set the owner to administrators and full control to admins and system and upon rebooting, I couldn't start up any services that allowed for internet access. There should be a tool that checks that these permissions are set to defaults, and not just for the f**king system key under HKLM.

Hate Point #1: I f**king hate the registry.

I did a backup of my documents and did a reinstall, had to check for updates & reboot at least a half a dozen times between software patches, the service pack, more software patches, and patches for updated versions.

Hate Point #2: I f**king hate downloadings**t for an hour, rebooting, and finding more things to download for the software I just installed. Combine thats**t.

...That is all.

Uhm,but why would you change the registry permissions like that? Just leave it alone lol What were the permission problems?

I agree on the updates though. Only yesterday I had 29 updates in one day totalling ~1GB. God help those at home where we have 1mbps internet.

I ran a variation of this, people seem to have bits of success with it.

http://www.windowsreference.com/security/reset-the-entire-regi...-defaults/

In my case it came out saying "failed" for tens of thousands of keys even though I ran it under administrative access and SubInACL supposedly is able to overwrite practically anything.

The reason I did it is because I kept running into installation issues where I got "permission denied" errors on installation, and Event Viewer and installation logs usually pinpointed what key was screwed up (usually it was keys that didn't have an assigned owner). I posted a thread on how to do it here.

http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/77333

It got to the point this past week where I couldn't install an update for AVG and I wasn't able to find anything that was pointed to specifically, just a generic error that searches on Google (not Event Viewer itself!) told me that it was usually related to permissions. This was on top of me not being able to install a driver for my phone with the same underlying issue, and updates for Microsoft Office among other crap. I finally had the last straw & said f**k it and just took the nuclear option of running those blanket commands knowing that I had everything important copied onto my external and untainted by any permission settings.

I don't have that issue ever. What DOES p**s me off is when they say somethings running and has to be shut down before I install but it won't tell me where it's running and there's no clues in task manager. You have that user account control crap shut off I assume? Oh wait, I have had that happen before. The you don't have permission crap. Can't think of any particulars though. And yes it's totally stupid. And I am a bad person and run as an administrator all the time which ticks me off even more when it says you need admin privileges to do something. I reinstalled 7 pro 64 the other day. Took 15 minutes to install and over an hour to do all the update crap. Foukin stupid! But that's always been an issue with MS!
