I want to upgrade the specs on my comp to increase performance and play the latest games at a decent graphics level. The radeon 5770 1 gb seems to be pretty decent and I think 2 gb ddr3 should suffice for now. What I'm clueless about is the motherboard. Some suggestions please.

Write your budget, it will be easier to recommend you the necessary hardware if we hve your budget.

Since you are talking about an 'upgrade', does that mean you want to keep your case? If so, then that will also limit your choices on replacement motherboards. For example, if you have a micro-ATX only case, there are fewer motherboards for that form-factor case. Or, if you have a mid or full-ATX case, you need to specify the number of PCI slots your case supports, as vendors sometimes aren't accurate or clear on this parameter.

Also, you may have to decide whether you want to support front panel sound ports of the "AC97" or "HD" type. Some motherboards and some cases are compatible with both types, some are not. For example, you may be unable to use an 'HD'-only motherboard in an 'AC97'-only compatible case. But, another option is to just not use the front panel audio ports. If only use speakers and you don't use headphones or a microphone, the front panel audio ports really aren't important.

Or...just be aware that when someone does suggest a motherboard, that you will either have to make sure it is compatible with your case (mechanically and electrically), or you may have to buy a new case, or live with certain limitations.
