Computer has a hard time starting problem

Hi I have a 2 year old Asus Laptop, it's a g71g running on windows 7 ultimate. Though the problem has existed still while i had vista.

I've have a problem which I've had for about 6-8 months, and it's slowly getting worse.

The computer has a hard time starting. That is when I press the power button it lights up the buttons for a second the fan kicks on for a second but then it stops and turns back off. Other times it will turn on but the screen won't turn on. Just the fan and the button lights.

-It does not ever turn itself off or die.
-It has battery life, I can unplug it while it's on and run for awhile probably 45 mins.
-I can also start it without the battery in it, so the cord seems to be okay.

I don't know if it's just coincidence but I usually unplug it &then take the battery out, hold the power button for about 10 seconds then put the battery back in, plug it in and sometimes it turns on. A friend recommended I try that. It works sometimes. Lately it's been getting harder to turn on.

Because of this I leave it on for weeks at a time.

Can anyone help me diagnose/fix this issue?

Let me know if any additional information is required
