Note: If you decide to contribute to this thread, please make all general location references (e.g. "lower-left corner") relative to the user facing the motherboard installed in a vertical (tower) case.

The reason for this thread is that I have found the system "ambient" temperature is greatly influenced by its location on the motherboard and can lead to invalid temperature readings.

Adjacent components (e.g. SouthBridge chipset, RAM modules, video card(s) or other nearby heat sources (e.g. bottom-mounted PSU)) can elevate the reported temperature by 5C or more. So, if you want to know the "real" temperature, or know where to locate an additional circulation fan to help normalize the ambient temperature throughout the case, you have to take the location of these sensor(s) into consideration.

edit to add:
IMO the manufacturer's User Manual should identify the location(s) of temperature sensors on the motherboard, just as they ID the loocations of slots, modules, fan connectors, etc.

edit to add:
If you want to isolate the location of the temperature sensor(s), you can use a can of "air" to zero-in on it by cooling areas of the motherboard while watching the reported temperature(s). Do NOT allow condensation to form from any spray "freezing" the components/motherboard. Rapid, extreme temperature changes can cause major mechanical stress on the components and might cause permanent damage.

Motherboard: ASRock 970 EXTREME3 AM3+ SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX

Ambient (aka chassis) Thermal Sensor is located at the lower left corner of the motherboard, directly under the "Super I/O" chip and to the left of the PCI1 slot.

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-880GM-UD2H AM3 880G HDMI Micro ATX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128439

Ambient (aka chassis) Thermal Sensor is located to the left of pin24 of the ATX 24-pin power connector, between the connector and RAM slot DDR3-4.

The sensor IS VERIFIED as influenced if a "hot" RAM module is installed in DDR3-4 slot. Accuracy is likely aggravated in that the RAM module and 24-pin connector/cabling can "box-in" the air in that area, reducing air circulation in that area.
