Run away while you still can! This site is cursed! Even though its a ghost town I still have a live bookmark that I check every day and post once in a while, I should have left this dump while I still had the chance but now It won't let go!

Hehe, but yeah, there's barely anyone left here.

strange this isn't my original account... I don't recall making a new one 4 years ago.... I found my original, but have no Idea my login info
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/visitor/27094/

I'm about to see if I get logged in! anyhow... I was coming back to this site cuz I'm bout to build a new rig... really a whole new network....

I'm going to use my current quad core set up with 8gb ram and NVidia gtx 550 ti 4 gb, and 1tb hard drive and im going to throw in a couple more 1tb drives also a infinitv4 tuner card.. This is going to be my central server type pc with little actual hands on use.

I'm then going to build several mini itx media centers to pull off of the server. They will be
a board of this sort

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VIA-Mini-ITX-EPIA-EX15000LG-1-5GHz-C7-...4abbbeff10

I will put either 1 or 2 gb of memory, a small harddrive as I will be using the server for mass storage. and a simple blu ray drive. I already have a plex server running, working well with my roku with hundreds of titles and tv shows + music,

so basically the capabilities as of now is, every room will have a pc. Every pc will have 100s of movies and tv shows and music in which they can individually add to. Every pc will be connected to cable television from the server. in which either 2 at a time can record live television to the server & watch something simultaneously

or 1 can watch something and record 3 things

or all 4 can watch something and no one record

or whatever, in otherwords there are 4 simultaneous options available... because its a 4 channel tuner card.

plus the server will have some games that are streamed to the meda centers using
http://www.streammygame.com

and perhaps onlive service which is streaming games from the internet that also require low hardware.

If anyone has any recommendations or concerns or whatever let me know. I want this thing to run pretty smooth.

LOL, Meats, unfortunately I have the same experience / feelings. May be a more scientific explanation for this is that, Mr. S. Sassen's using mind control drones over our heads! XD

Sounds a pretty impressive media / entertainment PCs project. So do you really need recommendations for upgrading the server PC, for building the client mini PCs, or for the overall setup?

For the mini ITX PCs, while the price for that board is quite impressively cheap ;) , I would still recommend perhaps a board with a bit more computing power than that. Such as ones with AMD Zacate or Intel Atom Cedarview chips. While the client boxes are using the power of the server, it won't hurt to have a bit more power from itself.

KC I would be very interested in seeing how your mini-ITX turns out, I've been thinking that it would be a very fun project to do and would love to do one myself but I don't have any spare cash at the moment lol. Thanks to how good the APUs and integrated GPU's inside the cpu and whatnot I think this is the perfect time to build one of those mini-ITX PC's. Heck, it would be a challenge but I believe doable to build a pretty good gaming mini-ITX PC.

Ive been wanting to do a mini-itx build for years!!! As for needing more power on the client side pc's it couldn't hurt but isn't necessary.... as I have a kindle fire, rooted with android system, and it runs onlive pc games flawlessly and connects and plays everything on the plex server as well. There is honestly no need for real pc power. I can understand the benefits of having pc power, but that defeats the whole purpose of designing my whole network to perform off of a server/client based system, in this situation the clients are basically serving as a high tech tv receiver. Im not saying I wont have a regular pc set up in my room, or perhaps just a real nice laptop, and if its lacking on something, the server can always help out.

I was looking for any general input anywhere in the project. There is a lot too it and im sure im missing some of the details somewhere. Thanks for the responses guys! guess this site isn't completely dead afterall...

I was just thinking about the project some more.... I just put my self in a what makes more sense kinda of situation..... so I said onlive works perfect on the kindle (which is now just a standard android device, along with my plex server. Which both have nice android compatibility, in fact the plex server client side works better on android than on windows, nicer appearance of menus and such...... soooooo how about these as receivers and Ill save my mini-itx project for something else, and will be allowed to put more thought into my server side!

http://lightake.com/detail.do/sku.Mini_Android_4.0_HD_1080P_Ne...1GB_-55124

I have to do a little more research on the media player, as to how much mouse/keyboard support there is... but from what Ive read about the kindle, and the kindle being basically the same thing as the media player, I can use an xbox 360 controller on it, run many emulators include nes, snes, ps2, etc., I know I can run onlive and plex (with all my movies and such) web browser, real remote control function, etc.

Then I may be able to save a little cash and build one real mini itx pc with a little power and come up with a use for it!
