Please assist in suggesting how to retrieve the files in the HDD:
1. The external HDD has been working with no issues till the last time a month back on the same computer. Taken out from my old Toshiba lap top 6 months back and used as a External HDD.
2. When I connected to the PC (Windows Vista) the Auto Play does not pop up automatically.
3. Under "My Computer" the HDD comes up as before as F: drive.
4. When I click to open/ explore the drive the computer freezes and I can not access any files.
5. Right Click on F: - "Properties" - the pie chart shows that the F: drive is empty with no files.
6. Error coming up - F:not available. Parameters not accessible."
7. I right clicked on "My Computer" - "Manage - " Disk Management" . I can see the F: drive/ external HDD listed correctly along with "Healthy, RAW" mentioned.
8. In Disk Management I changed the Lettering of the F: drive to Z: drive as suggested in some forums but there is no effect.
9. Error mentions: "Windows can not retrieve Z: drive"
10. The machine is reading the External HDD because as soon as I mount it - the "Safely Remove" icon pops up in the status bar at the bottom of the home page screen of the computer.

Thank you!

YOu will probably have to access the hd outside of Windows, that is, at DOS level.

Have you checked at toshiba.com, see if they have any recovery tool or similar, maybe diagnostics?

Some years ago I used this programa, http://www.getbackdata.net/ at DOS. I am sure they are many more out there.

Google for data recovery program or so.

Good luck,

I downloaded Recuva - it also was able to "see" the drive but couldnt access it. I then used easeus - this one did recognize the drive and showed me some number of files from the HDD but it was still running after 6 hours and showed some 311 hours more to scan. I had to stop the scan because I thought it had frozen the laptop and it had started heating up after a continuos run. Will have to retry again with all other applications along with the Anti Virus software switched off.
Any other suggestions.

Hello,

May I know what kind of hard disk it is? Hope, it is a SATA HDD and you are using a USB to sata cable to access the hard drive as an ext HDD. Make sure that it has no connectivity issues.

May I know what is the OS you are using on the host system. Is it a vista or XP? I think, accessing of a HD files on Win 7 OS from a windows Vista loaded HDD is a bit problematic.

I had a similar issue. When i used a vista HDD on XP, it worked. But did not work on win 7 and most of my tech friends said that it might be due to OS version incompatibility.

Thank you.
Since my last post on Feb 3 when I had to easeus after running for numerous hours leading to the machine heating up. I had ended the applications and switched off the lap top before taking the HDD off:
1. I connected the External HDD to the same lap top (Vista Premium) and the same USB port the next morning and it is not recognized at all now for me to run easeus.
2. Unlike the previous day I can not see it any where - My Computer, Device Manager, Disk Management.
3. I tried to use it on a Mac and on XP Home and the HDD doesnt get recognized.
4. I have used all the 3 ports of the lap top and while the LED light of the HDD goes on and there is a clicking sound along with whirring, the lap top doesn't recognize it any more like the first day. So the cable connection seems to be fine with that response from the HDD.
5. Lap Top OS:Vista Home premium
6. HDD details : CORRECTION its a "Hitachi" Travelstar 40 GB internal HDD from my old Toshiba laptop while I was using in an external 2.5' IDE Hard Disk enclosure over the past year and used just a fortnight back.

Hi,

Instead of accessing two hard disks at a time, see whether the hard disk is accessible as a single device. Try to connect the ribbon to the jumper and then access the disk as a single device. If there is no problem in the os, then your disk will boot up on an individual note. In my view, there is some kind of software conflict taking place in your laptop...hope this advice helps you.

Thanks. I tried to understand your recommendation. If I read you right breaking it down - you would like me to disconnect the HDD with the casing. Then use the External HDD and connect it directly internally to the lap top as it was originally set up so it is the only HDD being read by the machine rather than its own internal HDD and the external Hitachi HDD together. Please let me know if this is correct because then I would have to head to a computer repair shop who would have a machine with no internal HDD where I could attach the Hitachi HDD to try your theory.
As I mentioned in my last post - the external Hitachi HDD is not being read by any other OS including iOS and XP although the HDD does light up and shows activity.
I have used my other Firelite External HDD on the Vista Lap Top and it works flawless.

Yep,

You are absolutely on the spot my dear. I would also go with your thought to head to a repair shop in the vicinity and try to access the hard drive on an individual note. This is far better than accessing the data from your laptop as it can work in either way. If this can happen and it works, do remember to take the data backup then itself.

I am sure that this will work this time.

Tarun,
you said "clicking sound along with whirring"
A noticeable clicking sound that is unlike any heard before from said drive usually indicate HDD failure. ie: dead drive. You are probably better off taking it to a data recovery specialist if the data is valuable enough.

Thank you. Yes when I connect the HDD to the lap top the LED lights up. Then the HDD makes a clicking noise initially along with a whirring sound. When I put the HDD next to my ear I can hear it "working" - with the disk moving around.

I am puting this first paragragh in because I just realized that the clicking sound you mentioned may not be constantly happening as I think you mentioned that it only made this noise at first. I guess I am a little unclear if this is normal sounds or new sounds that the drive did not make before. If these sounds are normal to your drive and its just not being recognized then it probably makes my posts pointless.

However, upon further research for I found that the clicking noise can be caused by 5-6 different reason or more, all of which are unrecoverable by simple methods except one. IN other words non-simple methods would require someone with Data recovery skills. If I remember, the one that could cause it has to do with power in that something is faulty on the power circuit on the logic board or enough power is not being supplied by the pc power supply any longer.

Other, what I call 'unrecoverable by simple methods' reasons would be misalignment of the heads which could be and in most cases mechanical issues or could be corrupted firmware. I think but not sure but if the file table was corrupted it may also present this behavior possibly as what is usually happening is the disk heads are searching for a specific point on the disk at a specific track and it can't find this area so it keeps going back and forth from the landing area and proceeding to load, over and over again.
