  Does anyone do Flight Sim?

I'm looking to build a machine for a friend for FSX Flight Simulator but I have no idea what's needed for that. I've built machines for gaming and general purpose before but apparently flight sim is more cpu intensive rather than gpu, so any help is appreciated :)

The only thing I remember about FSX is someone on here, A_Pickle maybe, not being comfortable with it pegging all 4 cores of his brand new (at the time) C2Q.

MS Flight, which I believe is the successor, has pretty doable Recommended specs:

Recommended Hardware:

CPU: Dual Core 3.0 GHz
GPU: 1024 MB ATI Radeon HD 5670 or 1024 MB NVIDIA GEFORCE 9800 GT or equivalent
HD: 30 GB hard drive space
OS : Win7 SP1 64-bit operating system
RAM: 6.0GB

Looks like X Plane requires similar specs:
Recommended System Specifications

For the best experience, we recommend the following system specs:

a 3 GHz, multi-core CPU (or, even better, multiple processors),
4 GB of RAM,
a DVD-ROM, and
a DirectX 10-capable (DX11 preferred) video card with 1 GB of on-board, dedicated VRAM.

Ultima Ratio Regum

I used to be right into my flight sims, so was Plug&Play....

At the time, I had the Q6600 with 8800GTX, and 4GB of Corsair Dominator.

I found the system I had at that time, ran the game smooth enough on highest settings,
but avoided bad weather, etc because fog, extensive cloud, etc would slow down. As well as extra detail on the ground, etc. Technically, the game should have ran flawlessly, because other games like HAWX was far superior for "detail" even though it wasn't a sim, it out performed FSX. Suffice to say, my conclusion of FSX (for example) gave me the impression of crap programming/coding. I seen the game as always buggy.

For the latest flight sim, at that time of release (2011 i think) I had ASUS Rampage Extreme III, iCore 7 950, 6GB of Corsair Dominator 2000MHz and the GTX480. It ran flawlessly.

Depends on how much you are prepared to pay for hardware to run at eye candy, or for just pure sim purposes without the need for eye candy i guess.

....I'm back, but only as a part-timer... :)

Freaking nerds won't let this dump die!

As for Flight Sims, I remember when Flight Simulator X arrived and everyone was going bonkers for it, I also remember some sweet setups for the game, even a pic from a guy who built his own cockpit along with godlike equipment. Mad Catz sells fancier flight equipments in the $1,000 range, wouldn't mind to try one of those. Sadly I suck so much at flying, in all my years of Battlefield (1942 and upwards) I could never fly a plane to save my life, the most success I've had was maintaining awful air control but whenever I positioned myself to start shooting infantry I would always crash. Sucks I know but I do remember having a blast when I was a kid playing Star Wars: Rogue Squadron with a freaking awesome Side Winder joystick! (anyone remember those?)

Merry Christmas guys hope you're all having an awesome time.

Everything I write is Sarcasm.

Oh mine, an old member comes back for posts! And Least, I think you were the only female geek member that used to frequent HWA. This place's a ghost town now. I am just bored to come back to pop a few posts. I single-handedly increased the site bandwidth from 20 kbit/s to 75 kbit/s, quite a contribution. LOL ;)

As for flight sim, even if it's processor intensive, I would still invest for a decent video card. The player can setup multiple monitors, if he wants to simulate a cockpit environment.

Meats and Tam, yeah man, I wish Mr. site admin would just pull the plug on the HWA server already. Or... stop collecting easy money with ads, and move their behinds to renovate this site.

Yo Peaceful!

We should all hook up here on HWA. All of us from the good old days...

From Plug n Play to Dublin Gunner, to Mothow, and that idiot who boasted about his
build, who then got booted of HWA and then came back under a new new as a new person...
Lol who was that again? Mothow spotted his fake ID...

So, we should all hook up and be the way it was, including the FLAMES! LOL
