My father's been using a Netgear FR328S 8-Port Cable/DSL ProSafe Firewall VPN for over 10 years to keep everything in his house networked and connected to the internet. Unfortunately, it died a slow death and is no longer functional so he needs a replacement. I'm having a hard time deciding what would be good to replace it with.

A lot of the models I've looked at, especially those made by Netgear, are filled with complaints from people saying the throughput is terrible and cripples their internet speeds. Also, reliability seems to be an issue with just about every one I've looked at. Has anyone here purchased or dealt with any 8 port firewalls you'd be willing to recommend? His internet connection speed is about 12Mbps so it has to be a model that won't lower that. I'd like to recommend something that's reasonably priced, but he's willing to spend what's necessary to get a reliable device.

Thank you.

My dear,

Are you asking for a router recommendation?

Loosely speaking, yes, but with the security features similar to the Netgear model I referenced. Regardless, it's moot now. I found a Cisco model that fits all the criteria.

I am using a Cisco Linksys from the past few years and it is very effective in terms of its features and service. Check it out online and go for it

If you can, please let us know which model/version you selected and how well it works, apparent build quality, any complaints you have with it, whether it puts out a lot of heat, metal vs. plastic case, ventilated vs. non-ventilated and so on? Thanks.
