Hey,

My Laptop has been very very slow to boot. Hit turn on and wait about 20-30 min and then computer will fire up and all will be fine etc. Any hints. I have completed a restore from an extended period back prior to this problem. It is now not booting at all. Power light is on etc.

Any assistance to recover info on hard drive etc would be great.

cheers
Bongos

.
Try booting from an alternate drive. A different HDD if you can have/borrow one.

You may even be able to boot the alternate HDD from a USB adapter if you have an USB2HDD (IDE or SATA) interface and can restore your OS to the alternate drive (depends on what kind of backup you made...e.g. a bit-for-bit backup won't restore properly to a different HDD).

You may also try booting from optical diagnostic media like UBCD. Once that boots, you can also run various system and RAM diagnostics just to be "sure" nothing else is a likely contributing to the boot-up problem.

If you get any of those alternate bootup methods to work OK and they boot-up in a "normal" amount of time, then I'd suspect your original HDD most likely was the culprit. (and if that's the case, then as you've reported, even the restored OS wouldn't work properly).

If the problem remains, then it's more likely RAM (although not a given). Unreliable RAM can cause very unpredictable boot problems. For a discussion on testing RAM more thoroughly see
