I've just lost half my 16gb sdhc card's worth of vacation photo's to an issue where I get the "card needs to be formatted" message when I put it in a computer (I've tried several).
This happened to two of the cards I'm using, firstly I get these weird folders appearing when I open the card with text looking like this: ╒╔≤#h4.║hH
I also get USBC files appearing. Shortly after this I find I'm unable to access the images, luckily I was able to transfer files from the first card before it happened. I don't know what the cause is, whether it's the camera's, cards (two separate camera's and two separate cards), or the card reader.
Having encountered this problem before, I'm familiar with the some of the recovery programs available and I usually use easus partition manager which has a pretty good data recovery program although in the past I've dealt mostly with smaller capacity cards where losing data was not as much of an issue.
This time I just want to make sure I take all the right steps since these are important vacation pictures that I don't make any mistakes in recovering the data.
Firstly, is there any way to get through or bypass the "card needs to be formatted" message and go straight to the recovery phase (with any program), instead of formatting it first and then attempting the recovery?
If this is not available, is formatting the card before recovery the best way to get my data back or are there options for me.
Is there anything else I should know or be aware of before attempting to recover this data?

I don't recommend to go for a format before recovery. I suggest to go for a professional help or recovery service. What company cards are those......please mention? as it will act as an alert to others.
