please help

i have purchased a new windows 8 machine and tried to connect my usb external HDD in. it shows in disk management though not in my computer. in disk management it shows though with no drive letter. i also cannot assign a drive letter. it also doesn't say what file system it is so im thinking its fat 32. is this the case. would it be wise to convert the HDD to NTFS without data loss ?

Windows XP Professional
Pentium 3.00 GHz
2 gig Memory
1.5 TB HDD
