Situation: My (replacement) Asus P5B appears to be dying, with failed boots, spontaneous reboots, and the occasional failure to wake the monitors becoming more frequent. (I still need to confirm it's the mobo and not other, more easily replace components, but I'll need to upgrade sooner or later anyway.)

The thing is, I REALLY don't want to buy a DDR3-based setup since mainstream DDR4 is so close. I'm worried that if I keep using this setup I'll get data corruption, but the cheapest, refurbed DDR4 mobo on Newegg is almost $200, and of course i'll need RAM and a 2011 CPU.

Thoughts/suggestion?

Thanks Mothow, that's really nice of you to offer.

I'm still troubleshooting. Ran Prime95 for 12 hours over the weekend, and ran Memtest on Monday, no issues with either.

There was apparently a Win7 update a month or so ago that was causing issues with AMD drivers, so I did a driver repair. I also dusted the f**k out of the interior, as I'd let that build up, and cleaned up my startup applications and programs in general a bit. It hasn't done anything wrong this week, so maybe it was a software issue, who knows.

Also I was looking up on the web, if other people were waiting for DDR4, and it seems like the recommendation is not to wait. So if this machine does end up getting hosed I might just get a DDR3 set up. Hopefully it'll last me another year though.

Sounds like you may have solved your problem.Last time i had that problem it was my psu

Im happy as can be with my 4790K + Asrock mobo and SSD HDD i couldnt ask for a faster computer and 16GB of DDR3 1600 which is all you need with Devils cayon.Even though i do run it at 1866 i dont see to and improvements other than some benchmarks which i dont really bother with.So i really dont see a need for DDR4 right now

@Reason I would not wait for DDR4. it will take a while before it becomes mainstream let alone DDR3 going fully away. it's not the same transition as it was going from DDR2 to DDR3.
i actually have a very similar setup as mothow.
Intel 4790S, ASRock Z97E-ITX, Team Xtreme 4x4GB 2400, Corsair Force LS 240, EVGA GTX 750 all squeezed into a Corsair Obsidian 250D.
i also have a bunch of stuff still laying around and if you are interested PM me.

You can either be part of the problem or be part of the solution.

I'm still rocking my Q6600 + DDR2 build. I'm not gaming that much anymore and the newer titles that have "pretty" demanding graphics haven't peaked my interest enough for me to upgrade but I've been reading about The Witcher 3 and I think that will be my kryptonite. I'm wondering I fI can get away with just upgrading my graphics card lol.

The bottleneck will be huge going from a GTX550Ti to a GTX970 but I think it will still be a huge performance increase.

Yeah, a friend got a 970 and it looks pretty sweet. I was thinking that I'd stick with AMD for the OpenCL support but from what I can tell, Nvidia has parity on that front now, or at least close enough.

I did a full uninstall/reinstall of the vid drivers and the reboots have stopped. There was a windows update that had known issues with Radeon drivers. I don't know if it got reverted on my machine or not but as long as it's working OK, I'm not terribly concerned.

Meats my house hold PC is still running a Q6600.I just might toss one of my GTX 670 FTW's in it to see how bad the Q6600 bottle necks that if it does at all.Only thing is my Q6600 wont OC at all with the board i have it in now.But i do have a DFI 965 Dark and a Gigabyte DS3.I just may tooss the Dark in that system to see if i can get 3.0ghz.Because i know 2.4ghz will be a bottle neck for sure
