I don't know whether to post this in the MB section or the CPU section, but oh well.
I just got an ASUS P4C800 Deluxe, and the new P4 3.0Ghz w/800Mhz FSB. I installed everything as normal, and get the POST reporter saying "system failed cpu test". I have tried everything I know so far, including just starting with one HD, and the video card plugged in. I'm thinking the CPU was DOA. It was a retail box CPU, so that is surprising, but nothing is impossible. I guess it could also be the MB, but then would it actually use voice to tell me of the POST error? Should I contact the reseller, or Intel to possibly get a replacement? If anyone can help with some advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

My system consists of:
VapoChill Premium Edition Case
Intel P4 3.0Ghz w/800Mhz FSB
ASUS P4C800 Deluxe
Antec TRUE550 550W PSU
1Gb Kingston DDR400 (PC3200) 2x512MB
PNY GeForce 4Ti 4600
Audigy 2 Platinum
Seagate 80G UDMA 133
Samsung 80G UDMA 133
WD 120G UDMA 133
Seagate 120G SATA 150
ACER 16X DVD-ROM 40Xmax CD-ROM
Plextor 40/12/40A CDRW

Rusty,

That's a nice system you got there. My first impulse would be to call Intel since it is boxed and warranted.

I'm haveing the same problem with the Asus P4C800 Deluxe. I was running great for several weeks. Last night, I turned off the system, turned it back on, and at post, the system began chanting "System Failed CPU Test..." Not sure what to do yet. It's still early in my search. If anyone finds an answer, please post!

Best of luck..
Miles

I had the same thing happen to me when flashing the BIOS to 1006. Although I kinda screwed up the flash. The floppy disk failed as the new BIOS was being coppied over (at around 59%). I created a new floppy and continued the update from there. The update process was completed successfully, but then I got the dreaded "system fail cpu test" message upon reboot. Since I was working on the system in a computer shop where a friend of mine works he let me swap out the mobo for a new one.

I've since updated the new board's BIOS to 1006 and the system seems to be running smoothly so far (it's only been one day).

SYSTEM SPECS:
TTGI 420 watt power supply
ASUS P4C800 Deluxe mobo
Kingston Hyper KHX3200/512 x2 modules (1 Gig)
P4 3.0 GHz 800
nVIDIA Geforce 3 Ti200
SoundBlaster Live! Value
WD 80 Gig 7200 (8 meg buffer)
Plextor CD Burner
Toshiba DVD-ROM

Just another question, Did you guys get any Video at all when you posted and got the "System Failed CPU Check" voice? I don't get any.

Thanks,
Miles

Guys. listen

I had the same thing happen to me with the antec 550w psu.

The truth of it is, that you need the most up-to-date power supply out there... intel 2.03 with 12v 1.2

lots of people have antec that their system work with, but im not sure if antec is 12v 1.2.

Tonight im replacing the motherboard. Hopefully this will be the end of this trouble.

perhaps cooling or lack of it is the problem. try a deluxe cpu fan instead of a baby one.

All Those People with No Video - Post Problems Read This...

A SHORT WHILE AGO WE REPORTED that there could be a serious problem with Nforce 2 chipset motherboards. No sooner had the article gone up than Nvidia got in contact wanting to know all of the details.
Users of a new Shuttle Nforce 2 based machine had reported problems with the BIOS. They had been trying to overclock their machines only to find that, once they went past a certain point, the machine would stop working.

At first it looked like a problem with the Shuttle but then Asus motherboard owners reported the same problem. Then Abit and Epox. Not only would they stop working, it was proving difficult to get them working again.

Nvidia stepped into the breach and admitted that there was a fault with the Shuttle and Abit boards. The fault lay in the manufacturers missing off a jumper that Nvidia had specified on the Nforce 2 reference design.

Hard Tecs 4U, a German site, unwittingly uncovered the missing jumper. They had reviewed six Nforce 2 motherboards from different manufacturers and managed to kill all of them. The only one that was easy to recover was an MSI K7N2-L board which has the jumper. Using the jumper sets the BIOS back to a 100MHz FSB safe mode.

Other people had discovered that you could use a 100MHz FSB processor, for example a Duron, in a motherboard that had stopped working to get it going again.

And there lies the problem. Setting the FSB too high can stop Nforce 2 motherboards from POSTing. Once the motherboard has stopped POSTing, the only way to get it going again is to reset the FSB back down to 100MHz. Only most motherboards don't have the jumper so you can't do that.

Nvidia obviously knew about this problem because they built the reference Nforce 2 motherboard with that jumper. The fact that many manufacturers didn't put the jumper onto their motherboards means that someone deserves a slapped wrist at the very least. Whether that's Nvidia for not emphasising the need for the jumper or the manufacturers for not including it is something we may never know.

However, what we do know is that a fix will soon be at hand for everyone. Nvidia has managed to create a fix for the BIOS on Nforce 2 motherboards that will solve the issue. That fix has already gone to several manufacturers who should be able to supply an updated version of the BIOS for their specific motherboards soon.

Nvidia has said that it managed to get that BIOS fix to Shuttle the next working day after our initial article. Hats off to Nvidia for getting the problem sorted so quickly

I got the same problem today. I tranfered everything over, though it happened after I messed around witht he BIOS settings. Now I can't seem to get the CMOS cleared to reset the CPU. The tech suppot guys suggested that I get a different p4 CPU to make it really think there is a huge change. They are calling me back in the morning to talk me through a way to clear the bios any altertive ways. I tried everything I know.

I don't know if this will help any, but I had the same problem only when I took out the CPU and put it back in. I had BIOS v 1004. Asus Tech support told me to run MEMTEST86 (http://www.memtest86.com) from CD when booting. I ran errors on my second 512mb ram. Found power supply warm and memory even warmer. I upgraded BIOS to v 1006. Now I can't run memtest86. Been researching for days. Upgraded to BIOS v 1007 and things seem to clean up. I unplugged half of my devices also. Windows not only runs stable, but I don't get the cpu message anymore. I think I had multiple problems. When I replaced my brand new Antec 430 watt PS with a 550 watt Enermax, I don't have any stablility issues. Now I have everything plugged back in and things run just fine.

II have a similar system,
and I now this problem well,
in fact I can tell you how to reproduce it every single time.
We just have to get Asus to believe us.

And I'm hoping that the problem is just in the bios
and not a hardware thing The workaround
suggests its a BIOS issue.

First here is my system:

Case: LIAN-LI ALUMINUM PC-60H1S
PSU: ENERMAX EG651P-VE 550W W/ 2 FANS P4 READY
MB: ASUS P4C800 DELUXE (bios 1006 atm)
CPU: P4 3Ghz 800FSB
MEM:1GB CORSAIR TWINX1024-3200LL PC3200 2X512MB DDR 2-3-2
VID: Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
SND: Audigy 2 Platinum w/livedrive
HD: Seasgate 160GB SATA
DVD: Pioneer A06
KBD: Logitech cordless optical MX keyboard / mouse

Note: I specifically bought a high end system because I ddin't want to overclock, and Inever overclocked the system was always set to "standard" (overclocking AI setting).

worked fine first week, continued to work fine even if
I shut down pc completely,
and BIOS info was retained normally.

One day I lost power and turned on PC,
got nothing on screen,
and the BIOS speech reporter said:
"System failed CPU test"

turned system off, tried again, same thing

Turned system off, unplugged power cable, waited 1 minute, tried again,
same thing.

Turned sytem off, removed and reseated CPU/fan, same thing

Took CPU to manufacturer, they tested it on another mobo,
and it worked fine, nothing was wrong with the cpu.

reinstalled CPU, used jumper to reset cmos (see user manual to find it, its right nexrt to the fan connector), this time I got video immediately, I pressed del, and got a bios error message:
Overclocking failed, press F1 to run setup

(note eventhough the system was not, and never has been overclocked).

suffice it to say after resetting cmos and looking at the bios settings (defaults were fine, I merely disabled online sound and set the boot order)
the system continued to work beautifully.

So have any of you guessed how to reproduce the error yet ?

simple, just unplug the power cable from the back (turning off pc isn't enough)

so why does this motherboard cause the cpu and/or overclocking settings to be changed and/or corrupted whenever the power is unplugged ?
(noting that the system wasn't overclocked)

My first thoughts were the battery is bad, but I checked it with a multimeter, it was fine (read 3.2 volts).

The other question is why did the system arrive from the manufacturer without giving me the "system failed cpu test" error message (since it wasn't plugged in during shipping and the settings were being retained on batteryt power) ?

Its worth noting that the system arrived from manufacturer (without the DVDRW, sound card, keyboard/mouse since I bought those seperately, I don't think this has any baring on the problem though since everything worked fine once I reset CMOS.

And its a 550 watt 2fandesigned for P4 Enermax PSU and I don't think I have too many things installed, so its not a power issue.

Until Asus finds and fixes the BIOS, just hope that the power doesn't go off since the reset cmos jumper is in a hard to reach location. (not very nice of them to put it there).

Note: the manufacturer I bought the PC from is NCIX

Its not a nvidia thing, since I have an ATI.
Its not the PSU either.

I couldn't help but notice that the original guy who posted the problem and the guy above me (as well as myself) all had the audigy2 platinum (with livedrive).

Could that be causing an issue.

Noting that: the livedrive plugs in to its own power connector, and has a ribbon cable going to the sound card as well as an IEE1394 connector also going to the sound card.

personally I doubt the audigy or livedrive are to blame although its an interesting coincidence, did you guys install the livedrive on your pcs or just the sound card ?

Wake up guys, Miles Flanagan is right, stop to lose your time. I have all try too. Upgrade Bios, change cpu, change mobo, change PSU.... all for nothing. It sound strange, but believe us, it's just because the heatsink is too tight...it's all! My system run very well now...

Thank you,

I have a newly built system which ran for 14 hrs after being built.
I shut it down and now it won't post, there's no video signal, it just
makes a continuous high pitched tone... sort of a whine.
No one's mentioned anything about any noises. Also I don't get
the voice report on the post..it might be disabled in the bios.
No beep codes.

I have the same problem as Mr. Assante. I actually RMAd my p4c800-deluxe last week and just received my new p4c800-e deluxe today.

So, I finished building the new system with the p4c800-e Deluxe and I can't even get my PSU fan to spin. The mobo's green light turns on, but that is it. I have tried two PSUs, 400 and 430 watts, and they have been tested out just fine.

I have a Zalman 7000 copper HSF that I have loosened (based on the tight HSF issue mentioned above) and swapped out individual memory sticks in the different slots.

I probably should try a different CPU also.

This same problem did show up on the prior system.
