Hello,

After my gigabyte mobo died on me a coupla weeks ago, i've just installed a brand new Abit NF7-M mobo. I boot up and everything goes well...then windows xp brings up a blue screen saying there's an error. I've heard that xp won't boot up on a different mobo...fair enough, so i install xp onto my second hard drive, which also means re-installing all my programs onto my second hard drive... a chore but i've been meaning to do a system clean up. anyway, all of my work was in the my documents folder on my old hard drive. for some reason xp won't let me access the old my documents folder, saying access denied.

I've tried booting up on the old hd in safe mode, but it won't even boot to windows. i've tried getting to the files through ms-dos, but that doesn't work. i've heard that there is a way to reset the file permissions but i'm not sure how. any ideas??

cheers

So... you installed XP into a different drive, hooked up the old drive and can't access it... right?

Are you logged in as administrator? They should have access to everything...

Who is... oh, never mind :)

Hi i know the answer, i had trouble myself.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810881

To resolve this issue, you must turn off Simple File Sharing, and then take ownership of the folder:
Turn off Simple File Sharing:
Click Start, and then click My Computer.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
Under Advanced Settings, click to clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box, and then click OK.
Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message, if one appears.
Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
In the Name list, click your user name, Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group.

If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, click to select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
Click OK.

You may receive the following error message, where Folder is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of:

You do not have permission to read the contents of directory Folder. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control? All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.
Click Yes.
Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and the folder contents.

I hope it helps !!!

Steve

Congratulations on an excellent post. I switched mobo's a couple of weeks ago and had not been able to retrive my emails and contacts from the old HDD despite trying to recover XP and changing password with linux boot files.

Now I have all my info back and can format my HDD

Thanks muchly ;)

I have a similar situation but I cannot access anything on my second drive. I also replaced a motherboard and upgraded from 2K to XP. Now I cannot access my second hard drive. All I get is "Access Denied".

See here.

I'm at work and just found the post but could this be the solution to my problem also. I may have had the entire drive shared before the upgrade.

Thanks!

I can access some of the file and folder except the folder that contains my Pictures and videos in MY DOCUMENTS/ MY PICTURE which inside the ADMINISTRATOR folder.

@ Mal Lee. I feel for you - I had the same issue so have joined this forum since no-one else has replied.

Your problem is that XP Home does not have the same depth of security options that XP Pro does - so however hard you look, the 'advanced settings' tab to access and disable simple file sharing just isn't there. This misdirection for XP Home users is repeated all over the Internet!

Instead, you have to edit the folder permissions using the 'Safe Mode' method in order to take ownership and view your old 'My Docs' folder. There are a set of instructions listed here:

http://www.wikihow.com/Disable-Simple-File-Sharing-in-Windows-...me-Edition

...which, in summary says you need to:

- restart into safe mode (hit F8 before the XP logo appears)
- login as Administrator (just hit return)
- navigate to folder in question and select 'properties'
- select the security tab and edit the permissions as summarised in the post above (Replace Owner).

This should enable you to use the folder in the normal way when you next restart.

Good luck, Mike

Hi,

Since, you upgraded your motherboard to a new one, a fresh OS installation is essential on the master Hard drive (HD). Then only, when you connect the second HDD your files will be recognized. regarding the files in documents folder, i guess, that it is hard to achieve. All drives on your Hard Disk Drive (HDD) will be visible. But documents folder will only be available on the host machine.
