Um, actually I dont think the A64's dies size is that big, I think that its the same (or simmilar) size as the XP's, but they put a nice big heat spreader on it (like intel does).
To have a die of that size would kill your perfromance, unless it was clocked at like 5 GHz.

I recently bought an AMD 64 bit 3000XP+ on an Asus K8N-E deluxe board... I get temperatures of 59 deg c max (full load NFS underground 2 everything enabled and maxxed out) and idel 48 deg C
My mobo temp is around 35 to 39 deg C

I guess I'm safe?

Finally someone who can answer my question. In my bios i have 2 CPU temps a core temp and a surface tempurature. Wich one am i worried about in terms of heat. The surface temp is normally in the 30s but the core temp hits 50 at idle. I know you siad 50 is ok but what is the difference between these two readings?

Ok, core temp is more important becuase it basically the temp reading form the core. The surface reading is less accurate because the sensor is usually off chip. are you running with stock hsf? 50 seems quite high for idle, however if your looking through bios, its not considered idle since within bios the heat rises during usage..

AH seam as your here!!

The winchester cores, I know that the lower end CPus were used to test the performance of the new 90Nm cores, I see that there all basically the same, but with a different multiplier lock, how is this locked apended to the CPU?
Is it based on test perfromance,
silicon set in the die,
the usual die cut.

DO you have any official results on the break tests? what the highest voltages, temps, as no one seams to be quite clear on the MAX temps with the 90Nm cores, some same 50 others 65 and other say it could be as high as 75??
