u guys forget
dosnt the 3000+ have double the L2 cache than the 2500, thus when overclocking to 2.1Ghz it still may not be quivalent??

Athlon XP 3000+
Shuttle sn45g v2
ATI 9800 Pro
1GB DDR400
2*Internal HDD
1*External HDD

What? The 3000+ and 2500+ have the exact same Barton core with 512kb of L2 Cache. a 2500+ clocked to 3000+ would essentially be the exact same thing.

That is correct, The 2500+ and the 3000+ are the same when clocked.
Also, the 2500+ and the 3200+ are the same. When you clock your FSB to 200MHz(400) and with an 11x multiplier, you have yourself a CPU reading a Athlon XP 3200+ @ 2.20GHz. DO NOT BUY THE 3200+, buy the 2500+ instead, and with the money you save, buy a kick ass video card...
The maximum you can probably clock the 2500+ CPU is...
FSB 200MHz (400MHz), 11.5x Multiplier = 2.30GHz "Faster"
FSB 184MHz (396MHz), 12.5x Multiplier = 2.30GHz "Fast"
These two settings are the most stable with my configuration with a Vcore of 1.800 to 1.850...

Absolutley go with the 2500+, I may be lucky here or whatever it's my first AMD, Intel Man, but I got one with a Volcano 11 and am OC'd 210FSB and 11.5 Multiplier and am upto 2410mhz (Seems conservative should be at 2415, must be the board) at 39 degrees, I benchmarked higher than the P4 3.2c in Sandra... and is Rock Stable... heh heh and the cool thing with AMD or My Asus A7V600 is that in Post it says "XP3200+" ...Awesome!

To Keith Warden

Wow, you clocked up to 2.410GHz with the Athlon XP 2500+. It must be my Memory(Ram) or Heatsink. The highest I can make my FSB is 204MHz(408). @ 11.5x Multiplyer. Anything more than that and I get the blue screen of death.
I should get the Volcano 11+ heatsink and Fan. That may do the trick.

I know, it's crazy! I got it too 11X221@ 2430 but it always crashed during games so now I just run it 2.3 just to be on the safe side, it's kinda warm here. :)

Brandon Reed, I'm not sure what you mean. Your 2.60GHz is 2600MHz.
If you took a 2.60GHz Athlon XP vs 2.60GHz Pentium 4, The Athlon will kick ass.

I recently purchased the xp2500 and a speed strip to unlock it. After reading several posts I'm under the impression that the xp2500 is unlocked from the factory. Is this true? If so shoild I remove the speed strip.

Yes, everybody that I spoke with say that the 2500+ is Clockable from the factory. Now it dependes on your Mother Board.
Oh, how well does speed strip work?

I have a Biostar M7NCD Pro mobo. Here is the link to a review on the speed strip - http://www.overclockercafe.com/Reviews/other_misc/Speed-Strip/ I purchased it intending on getting the xp 2400 but changed my mind. I have it on the 2500 now but I am going to remove it. Probably wasted fifteen bucks.

Well, you can increase the FSB no problem, but the Multiplier is capped at 12.5x. So, the 2500+ comes with a default 11x and 166FSB.
I have tried to overclock my rig to 2400MHz, but noticed stability problems.
So the best and stable and fastest configuration I have is 11.5x and FSB 200MHz(400MHz). That's 2.30GHz. Faster than the 3200+(in all benchmarks) and faster is 8 out of 10 benchmarks for the P4 3.06GHz...

I hope this helps.
AMD vs Intel Which one do you like?

If I upgrade to pc 3200 will that allow me to increase the multiplier above 12.5?

No. The Multiplier is caped at 12.5x. Anything higher will go to the default 5.0x. But, the FSB is not caped. Plus the FSB will give you a higher performance boost. The most I have ever clocked my system is FSB 210MHz (420MHz) and 11.5x Multiplier / 2.42GHz. And Crached when the Windows Logo came up. If I had better Ram(Memory) like Corsair, OCz etc. than I can overclock it even higher......Anyway, chech out my system. This setup is the most stable...

I must say, that the 2500+ is definetly the most overclocking friendly. I currently use a DFI Lanparty NFII Ultra board and run my 2500+@2.2Ghz, by using a Frontside bus of 200. Although I did have to up my vcore to 1.725v, it does not run any different temperature wise, and is rock solid stable.

The AMD Athlon XP 2500+ is 1.83GHz You can overclock it to 2.30GHz, depending if your MotherBoard has Chipset/overclocking functions. You must understand that the Athlon XP Barton core @ 2.30GHz beat the Pentium 4 3.06GHz in many benchmarks. Anyway, you may want to get a better video card like a GeForce FX 5700, 128DDR, 8X or an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128DDR, 8X. They are both realy good Video cards with a good price.

For Overclocking the 2500+, check out my system Spec.
