Hi

Is it true that we cant unlock the new barton CPU multiplyer unless we have the program like super-strip? Or we can do it through the motherboard?

Thankyou!

some mobos will do it and there are various simple mods that can be done. U can buy strips to bridge points on the cpu or but a bit of wire in you socket at a certain place to bridge it for you...

If a mobo can unlock your CPU, then have fun. BUT, according to AMD it's not possible to unlock the XP 2500+ if it is factory locked.
The reason why AMD are now locking the Athlon XP 2500+ is most likely not because they hate overclockers, but because of fraud by vendors who sell Athlon XP 2500+ processors as 3200+ ones.
I think this speeks for itself...

Hope this helps...

Ok I've only read one page but I'll keep reading more of this. However, I have a few questions.

I'm thinking of buying an XP 2500 Barton (333Mhz) but I'm not sure if my board can take it or if my ram can stand the overclocking and if I should buy a new heatsink/fan for it.

Currently I wish to keep my motherboard since with bios upgrades it will support an XP 2800 as my motherboard manufacturer says.

MSI KT333 Ultra2 (2nd newest BIOS version update reads: Support AMD XP 2800+ (FSB333) CPU)

Does this mean it will take the Barton and if I overclock it to a 3200 it will still support it? I'm not too clear on this.

Another thing. If I'm overclocking do I need to worry about FSB and should I? My ram is only Kingston PC2100 DDR so I'm not sure if that can take the overclocking.

For my heatsink/fan I was thinking of:

Thermalright SLK-900 versions (about $38) and a Vantec Tornado ($14) to try and keep it as cool as I can. Should I do this or can the stock fan/heatsink overclock for me? I have an old case and only 1 case fan and my XP 1800 is running around 46 Celcius. Also, my motherboard CD-ROM has a program named "coolerxp" on it. When I run this I lose about 12 Celcius on my CPU temperature which is INSANE. I don't seem to notice a performance drop but does anyone know about this? Is it safe, good to use, etc?

Thanks :)

For everybody that has stability problems when increasing your FSB, change the FSB settings from 266/333 to 200. You should find them on your Motherboard.
For some reason, when I did that, I increased my FSB to 195MHz(390MHz) with a 12x multiplier which gave me 2340MHz.

Check it out.

2.3GHz @ 1.700v Vcore. That's good. I can't seem to overclock higher than 2.2GHz without increasing my Vcore over 1.800v. Well, it must be my mobo (Asus A7N8X Deluxe). Anyway,

Check out my rig.
I have to update the pic though.

Hey I have my Athlon XP 2500+ running as a 3200+ with CoolerMaster Jet 7 Heatsink and Fan. It stays around 32oC on idle and 40-43oC on a load.

It's set to 200 X 11 in the bios with a voltage of 1.72v. I have PC3200 ram (1x256mb) Cas 2.5.

Is there any suggestions on how to improve performance? I'm using an Aopen Nforce 2 board also.

Hmmm i'm not sure about that. From what others tell me, it's not that good to run it over 1.75v because it could fry it. My friend has the same chip, he is running it at 1.8v and says it fine, but I really don't have the money to get another chip if i fry it.

What about ram timings? Is there a way I can get performance from that?

First off, the only Athlon XP I know that has a 400MHz FSB is the 3200+, unless you overclock.
So, I would stick with the Athlon XP 2500+ and overclock it from 1.8GHz to 2.3GHz +. Depending on your Ram and cooling.

I have never heard of the "BIOSTAR nForce2 400 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU" before. The $ is sweet, but how is it's performance? I would stick with Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe or other similar Asus boards.
Anyway, good luck.

O.K. The AMD Athlon Chip you are talking about is a 64-Bit CPU which is called the AMD Athlon 64 3000+which is a Socket 754.
So, the motherboard that you refered to me is not the correct motherboard. The Motherboard only fit's Socket A CPU's eg. Athlon XP 2500+, 2800+, 3000+, 3200+ etc. What you need is a nForce3 mobo. Here is a link that may help you out.

For memory I would stick with OCZ and/or Corsair. They are very good overclockers.
Also check out this site. It may help you pick a memory for your CPU. Also, you want heat spreaders on your memory, so that when you overclock, they will stay cool.
U may have to cut URL again...
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/DevelopWithAMD/0,,30_2252_...98,00.html

Also, the case and power supply look really good.I think it will be O.K. Though, I would go for a 450+ power supply & with the same case.

And yes, you can overclock it to 3200+ and over. Poviding you have good cooling.
Later.
