Happy New Year to all!:)

my specs: Athlon XP 2500 (stock fan)
Gigabyte GA-7N400L
TwinMos DDR400 PC3200 Dual Channel Kit 256 MB x2 (with heatsink)
Sparkle 128MB Gforce 4 Ti4200
300W power supply
current FSB: 380+ (i forgot)
current speed: 1.83 GHz

i tried increaing my FSB to 200 to get a resulting FSB of 400 and the post show Athlon XP 3200+ but i couldn't get pass the "Windows Loading". I'm guessing it hanged or something. My multiplier is set to auto or 11 but i'm more positive on the 11. Now really hope that i could run my hardware to 3000 but that would be mpossible coz i lack some cooling devices but what can do for now to increase my speed?

thanks in advance:)

You may need to do a Ram upgrade. Is your ram a DDR400, PC3200? Most of the time it's the Memory that may fail, before the cpu.
You shouldn't have a problem increasing your FSB to 200, and leaving the multiplyer to 11x. The Athlon xp 2500+ is made to handle these setting no problem.
Try getting better cooling, like the Volcano 12 Extreme, and some Arctic Silver 3 or 5 compound. Also a few more case fans if needed.
If you don't have heat spreaders on your memory, try buying some. They will help your memory overclock better. Totaling what you need may come out to be around $65.00 But, well worth the $$$..
Also, when you Overclock, try increasing FSB and Multiplyer a bit at a time. Then if you run into stability problems, you may have to increase the VCore.

I have my system with the 2500+ running @ 2.32GHz. Multiplyer 12x and FSB 193MHz ie: 386MHz.
According to "SiSoftware Sandra Standard 2004" out of 6 benchmarks, I take on the P4 3.0GHz, P4 3.2GHz, Athlon XP3200+, and Operon 2.2GHz. I beat them all 5 benchmarks out of 6.

The AMD Athlon XP 2500+ is probably one of the best cpu deals AMD has ever come out with.
P.S. the Athlon 64 FX51 and P4EE Kill me dead though...

Hope to have helped.

I just got a ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe and a Athlon XP 2500+. When I try to change the multiplier in the BIOS it goes up to 12.5 just fine, but then when I boot into windows and run WCPUID it still shows it at 11. I go back into the bios and it will still be at 12.5. I have gotten the system clock up to 192.10/system bus at 384.21 which shows the clock at 2113.13MHz. I've had to leave the RAM setting at AUTO, when I try to boost it to 400(PC3200) windows won't load. I also changed the VCore to 1.775. Still puzzled as to the multiplier problem. Any one have any ideas?

I've also upgraded the bios to the latest version, 1008 I think the version is.

O.K. Try 12x for multiplyer and under. Your board or CPU may have a locked multiplyer. I have the Asus A7N8X Deluxe rev. 1.4, and my max multiplyer is 12.5x.

Well something sure is locked! I've tried 12.5, 12.0, 11.5, 10.5 and WCPUID always shows 11.0. Is this a common problem? I just bought the CPU I might be able to take it back, how can I tell if its unlocked or not?

Well, if you just purchased the Chip, most likely it's locked. The reason for AMD doing this is because stores are clocking 2500+ computers to 3200+ computers and selling them for more money. There are some motherboards that maybe able to unlock Athlon Chips, but I am not sure about which ones. You may only have the ability to increase your FSB. That shouldn't be locked. Also, search the net for more info on this.

That's what I did and that's what I found out. They are locking the multiplier. The ASUS A7N8 is suppose to be able to unlock it. But mine is then newer A7N8-E Deluxe and doesn't seem to be doing that. I've seen a few ideas about how to fix it. The easiest seems to be this, http://www.speed-strip.com/over.htm. Not sure if it'll work or not. And I'm not sure it's something worth getting if it did.

I dont think there is a way to really unlock it to 13 inless you get the hacked bios for your board, the one i use is perfecrt for that and gives many more overclocking tools search for the uber bios for the mobo i have.

I have overcloked my attlon xp 2500+ at 2,20 3000+ with the standard core voltage. I'ts very stable (run unreal tournament 2003 110 hours with passmark burning test in background) The performance it's over a true 3000+ and i'm just overclocked with the clock mult (turbo mode in bios fsb 170mhz) Why Amd sell 2500+ if could turn at 3000+ (some people turn her 3000+ at 3,9ghz héhé). After i try to turn at 2.4 but the computeur don't start, tested whit a core voltage 2,1v (116w) what is the real limit of the processor whitout a ultra expensive big water cooler ??? I spend many hour (a hole week) to test my cpu to her limit but when i reach her ( i think ) the cpu have a litle buzz (!!!) Lag, freezze and unfreeze, Make many error, but it's some time.... Re-set everything to default in the bios. If this works, try increasing the multiplier and/or the FSB slowly. Don't increase it to what you want right away. You may damage something. Up the FSB every 5 MHz, then when you run into stability problems, lower it down 5 MHz. Then increase the Multiplier by 0.5x. When you run into stability problems again, then raise the VCore one step up. I think the Athlon XP 2500+ can take up to 1.9v with good air cooling.

If your computer won't start at all, then disconnect the power from the back. Disconnect everything but the CPU and Heatsink/fan. Plug the power in again and press and hold TAB BUTTON then turn on computer. After press Delete Key to enter bios. Remember, make sure that nothing is hooked up when you do this. No harddrive, CD-roms, no case fans etc.

It depends. Opteron is a fantastic CPU (Socket 940). You can also have several of them on one mobo. It's pricey though.
The Athlon 64 3000+(Socket 754) would probably be the way to go. It's easily overclockable over 3700+ and very affordable. It's a good start for 64-bit. You can pick up an A64 3000+ & a really good ATI video card for about the same price as an Opteron.

And the case that I recommend is in this link.

They are both really good video card companies. Personally I like ATI. But I have a NVIDIA GeForce4. (I purchased it for really cheap back then).

ATI
Fantastic Company, There Video Cards performs really good & very quiet. They have many more options than NVIDIA cards. ATI Drivers seem to have problems in the past. But not anymore. They also have better picture quality than NVIDIA cards. Except for the GeForce FX 5900 series. It seems to keep up in quality.

NVIDIA
Aggressive Advertising Company. There Newer Video Cards perform well. They don't have as many options as ATI, but NVIDIA has faster clock speeds. I think there picture quality isn't as good though. They are also louder than ATI cards, but there drivers are A+.

Well, my next card is ATI all the way. An ATI Radeon 9700 PRO performs amazing and is price effective. Picture ATI as AMD and NVIDIA as Intel...

Check out review. ATI dominates...
