P4P800 deluxe
p4 3.0 ghz 800fsb
samsung ddr400 512mb
ati 9600 pro

I am unable to play any game in X8 agp. All games hang after 20 seconds or so (my whole computer freezes. have to hard shutdown).
I have replaced the video card.
I have replaced the mother board.
I have reinstlalled XP.
I have tried new bios.
My temps look good on MB and CPU.
My previous card (evga 5200) worked in X8 mode.
The only time it works is in X4 mode.

After taling to ati they said that they have just found out about this problem and no more info. (take a look at the ati site this is happening to 9600 cards)

Can anyone help me get it working in X8

Ryan,
Interesting, I didn't know there were any games out there that could play at 8X yet. Where did you see or here this at? Just curious.
Can you play at 2X or 4X?

well I could be wrong but I think that 3dmark03 is capable of it.
In my situation it freezes on postal2 and 3dmark. have not tried any other
games yet.
Could this be a power issue?
My power supply is 300 watts.

Look at the URL. It refers to X8 capable systems.

Ryan,
I did read the url, but my point is that even though your mobo supports 8X I do not believe there are any games that require you or that you can set the graphics card at 8X and play them successfully.

If the games run with the card set at 4X why are you concerned?

You need to find out if in fact there are games that require the 8X and then you should be concerned.

Ryan,
Basically what ATI has stated in the article is that they are aware of the problem and that updates will be made available in the future.
Looks like they don't have a fix for it yet.

Regards,
Jay

Could you specify what your particular problem is? Do you have a Radeon 9600 Pro?

Don’t laugh I just brought what I thought to be an ATI 9600 that’s what was on the box.
When I first install the card I had all types of problems

I have now found out that it was a Giga Cub card http://www.gigacube.com.tw/products/r9600.htm
I had the same problems using the drivers from the ATI web site... I just installed the Drivers from the CD and DX remove all hardware conflicts (Always check to see if you have any conflicting devices) now I can play all games even c&c without freezing.. hope this helps
also make sure you AGP drivers for the mother board are uptodate

Ati has since fixed my above problem.
The fix was part of the 3.5 cat drivers.
thanks for the posts.

I have a PIII/866 and a Asus CUSL2C mainboard, running a 9600 Pro at 4xAGP, having the same freezes... could this be related eventhough it's running at 4x?

Olrite, I tried Catalyst 3.5, 3.6 and also the Omega drivers, no success. I've trying downgrading to 2x AGP, still freezes. I even have the luxury of having a card with a bad fan I still need to bring back to the store. I could use this to verify it's not accidently an incidental defective card.. both have the same problem.

I've found an application that triggers the freeze quickly: Age of Mythology, either in the menu already, or within seconds during gameplay. Tomb Raider - Angel of Darkness freezes occasionally. However, 3D Mark 2003 never does even under the heaviest loads.

I haven't the faintest...

I've the same problem with my "built by ATI" Radeon 9600Pro. C&C Generals and SimCity 4 lock after 2-3 seconds. Other games and benchmarks function very well. I don't have an idea, way this problem occur and I really tried every option to fix it.
The only solution I've found is to reduce the hardware acceleration. But then I have i flickering mouse cursor and bad performance.
May it be a problem with some mouse drivers or is it a hardware defect, I don't know.
There are some users of the 9600Pro that have similar problems and some that do not. Thats tricky ... ATI doesn't respond to my eMails ...

I had the same hangups on my ATI 9600Pro card with Nascar2003 game. I went through every driver I could find for this card along with different 4 in 1 drivers.(Don't forget AGP driver is not included in 4in 1 drivers, have to install seperately, doh!)Found out it was my soundcard drivers conflicting somehow. I have the Asus A7V600 board with soundmax audio on board. I reinstalled the newest agp drivers and installed the newest digital audio drivers for soundmax. ended up reinstalling the drivers that came with the board. Once the old drivers were overwritten game works fine. Intitally I kept getting a blue screen with no info. It wasn't until I tried the new digital drivers that I got the memory dump with smwdm.sys info. Traced that and found out it was the soundcard drivers all along.

Yea I tried contacting Ati as well as Sapphire, but they reply that getting games to run is not their problem, you should refer to the game developer...

I found out something interesting:

if I start the game (c&c generals) and DONT move the mouse - nothing happens. The start screen is displayed and the game works. I can see the standard movement of units which are shown in the title screen.

I switched my mouse from USB to PS/2 but there is still the problem with my locking c&c after moving the mouse.
The reduction of hardware acceleration only effects the mouse cursor acceleration (I read this). This means that I can reduce possible sources of this error to my mouse (MS Wheel Mouse Optical) or the hardware acceleration of the mouse cursor (more possible!). But that doesn't help me ;-) because the problem is still existing ...
