Finally managed to fix the problem with the 9800 Pro version. For those of you who don't know, I was having exactly the same problem on the 9800 as everyone else using 9600. The only way I got round it was lower the core speed from 375 to 300!! How annoying is that! This must be a driver problem, as how can the 9600 and the 9800 be having exactly the same problem?

I had previously tried the usual tricks, but without many options in the bios was pretty limited. Luckily purchased machine from Dell, so I'm tempted to send it back and get a replacement card, just to make sure it's deffo ATI problem and not just a dodgy card.

Cheers,

Stu

Its propably the small cooling, compare 9800 cooler to FX5700 cooler?
Not driver issue.. But weird is that my 9600pro had stock 400/600 and i solved problem with OC to 423/630??? weird isnt it worked now with all things on @ week...

Hmmm you could be right! I'm hoping the drivers cause the card to run hot...now that would be a nice thing to find out.

Hi Folks
I don't want to get into a fight over this, but awhile back some guy said that the purpose of this thread was to help all 9600Pro owners to solve or at least reduce the problems that they are having getting this card to work. So if anyone wants a NVidia card, fine then get one, but please, do respect those that want an ATI card, remember, if there was only NVidia cards and no other types, how much do you think an NVidia card will cost? Answer whatever they want you to pay, cos you will have no alternative, unles you want play games on consoles only.
So please, lets keep this thread for help and stop the ' my card is better than yours', or ' NVidia never go wrong- really is that true, are you sure, 100% sure?????
And I m glad to see that someone else finds that using NForce2 mobos has helped them, so one problem must be the VIA chipset, and that will hopefully be sorted- perhaps VIA might help on this.
Regards

your truly a f**kin idiot whoevers badmouthing ATI... look at all the benchmarks you retard. The 9600 Pro performed JUST under and sometimes BETTER then the 5900ultra in HL2! How the f**k is your 5700ultra gonna compare? Read the article that whoever just posted for yourself, are you saying theyre all ATI fanboys too? You think the actual HL2 version is gonna change that much? HAHAHA you really are retarded and just another nvidiot...the difference is like night and day, i dont think the full version of HL2 is gonna make that much of a difference. I Admit im an ATIdiot fanboy but i have a reason why im an ATIdiot fanboy... I had 2 geforce cards and i picked the 9600 Pro over nvidia because of its performance in DX9 games and the price. In dx8 games YES the 5700ultra outperforms the 9600 Pro by maybe 10fps but whocares... i can still run every dx8 game full settings without a problem... 10fps doesnt matter to me if im still getting high frame rates.
If your 9600 Pro's are running hot, you have a faulty card. The cooling doesnt matter... the 9600 Pro runs very cool. Just look at the overclocks people are getting with that little POS ATI fan. I've read a review that the 9600 chip (i forget what its called i think its rv350 or something) that its one of the coolest running chips out there.

About chipsets: Indeed i rather sell a intel chipset than a via one. (via has had many driver related probs. Intel much less, that doesn't mean Via is crap.) We rather sell Intel in opose to Amd , in case of temperature and offcourse the mobo chipsets(Via again). Don't get me wrong; i have had an Amd as well, it runned fine. But for some reason Intel gives me more security for a failsafe system which is very important for a healthy company. At the moment the videocards are the real troublemakers.. Manufacturers want to give us the best performance for the lowest price, and that leads to trouble. As well as Ati and Nvidia wanting to have the fastest cards all the time, which leads to unreliable drivers, rushed production process etc. etc. Just buy what you think is best or what you have had the best results with in the past.

And I agree please don't be so childish with this swearing at eachother which card is best, sad.. This thread is about finding a solution for a problem. Everybody knows that a supercard with a s**tty mobo/mem/harddrive still makes a crap system , plain and simple. It's about the combination that makes the machine a good gamers pc. If you're 5700 kicks my 9600, yeah? and the 5950 kicks youre 5700. And the 9800xt kicks all.. for now.. with these drivers.. with this program.. in these conditions.. This can go on forever. Im never paying 500 euro/bucks for a card, simple as that, and most people agree.
We all want a decent card FOR THE MONEY we paid for it. Ati and Nvidia both have these cards.

As i stated in an earlier post, I remember 3dfx being the king of cards for a few years, nvidia then as the new player was mocked at. Who says history won't repeat it self? Companies should focus on producing a reliable product for a nice price, not the fastest card on the planet. Who cares, in two months time those cards are allready replaced with even faster models, we all know this!! 80 % if not more of the videocards sold worldwide are midrange cards anyway. (like the 9600) Ati And Nvidia should both keep up the good work as well as keeping track of the customer in future time, before you know it a third company pops up and wipes Ati and Nvidia off the planet..

Both companies are producing to complicated drivers, the customer can change everything for the card, the majority of people don't even use all those pages of settings (and frankly dont care/or even know what all the options do), i just want a stable card. Many of these options are really totally useless and not documented or explained by the manufacturer.(not very customerminded is it??) I am supposed to know that if i run C&C generals I have to disable hardware mouse, enable fastwrite and jadajadajada.. NO, I don't care! It want to be able to play C&C generals?NFS underground/COD etc etc without fiddling!! I should be able to sell a card to a 14 year old and just explaining him, push the card in, install the driver and have a blast! ( SIMPLICITY, STABILITY & RELIABILITY are so very important!!!)

The people who want to fiddle with memory clockspeeds etc will do this anyway.(why should i push my card to the limit for 5 % increase in framerate, if a game runs great it runs great. Im not risking my system on some perfomance issues) The majority of people buy a card to play a game with descent framerates and that's it. I rather have a failsafe driver with no options at all, then a buggy driver with 5 pages of configs. In the end we want to play games without probs.

And my statement of agp4x with cat. 3.8 is offcourse not the ultimate solution, but it will help the majority of people, especially people with my system specs. (asus p4p800/512 dual/p4 2.4) And it's easy to understand and doable by all. I hope I helped out at least a few people...

Well enough bla bla and let us (ati owners!!) all hope that catalyst 3.10 fixes all problems.

I finally have a fix for my Age of Mythology hard lock problems (check page 44 for my previous post if you are curious about the prior details).

I got home tonight and noticed ATI had posted a new Catalyst driver (version 3.10). I downloaded Catalyst 3.10 and installed it. Age of Mythology works perfectly for me. It may work for a few of the other games people were complaining about - Neverwinter Nights etc.

Thanks to all for the great work and suggestions,

As i have posted before, Neverwinter Nights works after two hours of playing... for anyone that continue with problems i will say that i have the default settings but working at agp 4x... my old crappy mobo doesnt support more. But i dont feel the need, by now, to playing dx8 games at 8x. Possibly the wont work or will work with problems.

....

Well, I installed catalyst 3.10 and have tried 2 games so far, both still crash on mouse movement :-(

Deus Ex 2: invisible war crashes after about 3-5 min of play while moving the mouse

Counter-strike still crashes as well, after about 3-5 min of moving the mouse in the menus it locked up my system..

I also tested both games with hardware acceleration lowered by 1 notch, same lockups...
(also ATI control panel and Catalyst drivers still refuse to load when hardware acceleration is lowered by 2 notches)

I have several other games i can install and test, once i've done that ill post the results..

Still no mention from ATI of mouse lock-ups in the "known problems" or "Fixed in this driver" ....

All i can say is if this isn't a known problem yet ATI is more incompetent then even i gave them credit for.
Looking more and more like ATI doesn't give a crap about our problems...

DoomGaze, the reason why there are no posts at this website about problems about the Geforce FX 5950 is quite simple...

It is because no one is willing to buy one!!! Radeon 9800XTs have a much brighter future, and therefore they have a higher demand, which means the suppliers to keep up with demand sell more, making more people with Radeon 9800XTs than the Geforce FX 5950s (which have low demand). All Economics and logic baby!

If there was no ATI radeons, NVidia would still be knocking out Geforce4 TI4200 and the like and the PC games market has a whole would die and then we would have to put up with either dressed up versions of Quake 2 and Unreal or be forced to buy a flipping console.
So NVidia fans or fan (LOL) please either start your own thread or if you want to post something, make it worthwhile- this is ,after all a help thread for ATI owners- not a smug site for childish little boys that love waving their graphics card about and shouting' look at my NVidia, oh lucky me, my i.m a lucky little boy' For christ sake, stick it in a slot and play with the thing- your PC that is LOL

PS anyone notice how NVidia sounds like one of those iffy conditions you can get that gets the tadger doctor smiling and nurses laughing and wives very very cross!!!! Maybe its the VD in Nvidia.
