for the guy who is still having problems with Deus Ex 2:

My specs are:
Athlon 1800+ XP
Asrock k7vt2 mobo
Sapphire Radeon 9600pro 128
768mb DDR
Audigy 2 ZS soundcard

I don't know how close my specs are to yours, but I haven't had any problem playing Deus Ex 2, even before the 3.10 driver release. I have noticed some artifacting since i put the new drivers in, but never has it froze up on me. I run it at 1024x768 32b res, 4x AA, and all detials turned up to high. It might be something else causing the problem other than the radeon.

>> Re: ATI 9600 pro problems hang freeze
I purchased an ATI 9600 XT about a week ago and have the same problems as everyone else. I have tried everything short of flushing it down the d@mn toilet! And NO, the stupid 3.10 update didn't do s**t! Nothing in these 53 pages has worked. I had an old Geforce 2 card that played every game flawlessly (even though very slow). I read one post that touched on something that I tried last night briefly before I had to get some sleep, and it gave me the longest game play so far in Homeworld 2. I was tinkering with the IRQ settings in my A7V333-X mb and noticed that all the usb ports, the 9600 XT and the integrated sound for the mb were on IRQ 11. I use a Soundblaster live card, so I disabled the integrated sound and got just the Soundblaster and the 9600 on 11 by themselves (I'd like to get the Soundblaster off but haven't figured out how yet). Well this seemed to work somewhat. I played for about an hour with good frame rates and no choppyness like before. Unfortunetly, I paused the game for 40 or so seconds to use the bathroom and came back to my desktop with no game to be found. The only good news is it didn't give me the blank blue screen freeze up it normally would.

Not sure if this will lead to anything, but if anyone else is at the end of their rope and wants to try a different direction, feel free to tinker with this IRQ idea. I will dig deeper as soon as I get a chance and will let everyone know if I come up with anything concrete.

Here my configuration btw:
Athlon XP 2000+
A7V333-X mb
512 mb Kingston PC2700
ATI Radeon 9600 XT(b) (b=bastard edition)
WD 120 gb 7200 rpm hd
Soundblaster Live X-Gamer
Windows XP Pro
Latest drivers for everything
Latest bios for everything
Latest Divx encoders/decoders
Logitech cordless optical mouse

yeah NVIDIA's last good card was the ti4200... the price/performance for the ti4200 was very good.

Hi Kevin
Your work on IRQs might be the answer for a lot of problems, and its worth noting that your card is 9600XT. I will have mooch about the web for info on IRQ settings, their meanings and any other stuff. And any links will get posted here.
Regards

Thanks Twilight!

That info is going to be super helpful! I'm gonna start digging into this tonight and see if I get lucky. Also, I came across a post on another forum from someone with a 9600 Pro that was having freeze up problems. They unplugged a couple case fans to free up PSU resources and it solved the problem. I'm sure tons of people have tried the same thing, but I think I'll tinker with power distribution tonight as well. I'll post whatever I can figure out.

Thanks again.

re:Allen Nelson

Hello, you mention not having any problems with Deus Ex 2, I'm just wondering if you get the same problems as i do in the other games on mouse movement
or if you're system just happens to be problem free in the mouse movement area

Games known to crash on my system since installing the 9600pro: Counterstrike/Day of Defeat(managed to get it working by changing to D3D), Mysterious Journey 2(working if you disable hardware mouse), Sim City 4, Empires: dawn of the modern world(working if you lower hardware mouse acceleration by 1 notch), Deus-ex 2: invisible war, Lock-on: modern air combat, Lords of Everquest, MS FlightSim 2004 and there are probably a few i've forgotten

interestingly i've never had problems with games like Call of Duty, Battlefield 1942, Unreal 2003 and other games i've noticed other people having problems with.. it seems you either get the mouse lockups or the lockups in games like Cod, and not both on the same system....

*To everyone*
Also ill just mention this again incase anyone missed it, Counter-strike and Day of Defeat (and id assume any mod run through steam) Works in Catalyst 3.10 *IF* you run the game in D3D mode, not OpenGL.

Re: Kevin,
Do becareful and change only one thing at time and do keep notes of changes you make- incase things go belly up on you. Keep us posted, oh and bear in mind that 2000 and XP seems to handle IRQs a bit differently an win 9*. Anyway , good luck

Here's the results of my IRQ tinkering:

Looks like for those of us who were not helped by patch 3.10, and it seems there are still a few, it may be a conflict with the IRQ that is assigned to your AGP slot. If you look at my previous posts on this page (page 53) you can see the whole story. Well, I did a little tinkering and managed to remove everything except the 9600 XT from IRQ 11 and now it seems my card is happy and content. I just finished playing Homeworld 2 for a little over 2 1/2 hours without a single lockup or even a hiccup. I have all of the detail settings to max too. Before, I was lucky to get 2 minutes out of the game even with all detail set to low.

To put it as simple as possible, it seems that the top two PCI slots share the same IRQ (11) as the AGP slot (at least on mb's with 6 PCI slots). For me it was pretty simple. All I had to do was move the old Soundblaster card from the second slot below the AGP to the third. The bios then assigned the Soundblaster card to IRQ 10. Seems the 9600 XT doesn't like to share with certain other types of cards. If you check out the links in Twilight Guy's post, just below my original post, there is some very useful IRQ info to be had.

As far as the card's settings go, I have everything pretty normal. Fastwrite is enabled, Overdrive is enabled, Open GL and Direct 3D settings are both at default. My motherboard only supports AGP 4X, so that's what it's set to. Hardware acceleration is set to full with write combining enabled. I also left the 3.10 patch installed. All my clock speeds in the system bios are set to normal (what they should be for my configuration) and the AGP memory is set to 256 mb. Plug n Play is enabled. AGP performance control is disabled. In other words, settings are pretty much default in bios as well.

I'm glad I can finally use this d@mn card and stop screwing with it. Anyone that has tried all of the patches and other things in the 53 pages of this topic and hasn't found anything that fixes their problem may want to try isolate the AGP slot on it's own IRQ.

Hopefully this post will help at least someone with the 9600 XT or Pro.

Thanks again to Twilight for his help in researching the IRQ info!

For all those with a VIA motherboard, here's a report.

After the horrible mess with the Hyperion 4.50 drivers (which I thankfully didn't install), I wanted to wait some time before I installed the 4.51 drivers. Finally got to install them yesterday. And what can I say? SUCCESS!! :-) No more crashes!

Haven't tried 8xAGP or fastwrites yet, so I can't comment on that.

So for me the problem was with the motherboard and not the graphics-card.
ATI will see my repeat business, VIA will not...

Has anyone here tried Counter-Strike with the new driver? Catalyst 3.10? I'm at work right now and will try it when I get home but just wanted to know while I anticipate.....

Thanks!

re: Jason S

I've tried counterstrike with 3.10, At first it looked like it didn't work (and it didn't) but then i switched from OpenGL to D3D(D3D didn't work in catalyst 3.9 for counterstrike) and the game works again, so if you run the game and still get crashes try switching over to D3D mode..

hopefully as long as you run the game in D3D you should be fine, at least that's what worked for me

Also i'm still looking for a good motherboard to upgrade too.. If anyone is using an intel p4 based motherboard(would have to support my p4 2.4 chip) and they have NO problems with their 9600 pro's please post the motherboard name (full name so i can look it up) and manufacturer, thanks

after reading this thread for a long time my previous system an old K75SA and 1ghz athlon i had problems with c&c as that was the main game i played however i solved the problem with turning on mouse trails and worked perfectly however ive recently upgraded to p4 3ghz new system etc and this problem no longer exists i think a lot of the problem is with old systems running new hardware that just isnt built for such an old system just my opinion if you have K7S5A turning on mouse trails will fix c&c. 3.10 drivers seem to have greatly improved things well done ATI

The easiest wat to view what hardware is assigned to what IRQ is to go into your device manager. Once there, click on "view" in the drop down menus above and select "resources by connection". Then expand the "+" signe next to "Interrupt request (IRQ)". This will give you a complete list of what hardware is assigned to what IRQ.
