>> Re: ATI 9600 pro problems hang freeze, and Radeon 9000LE, too
I have a similar problem with my Radeon 9000LE card on a P4 2.66 XP/SP1 system. All programs works fine except lauching XP Plus! games (for example HyperBowl Plus). The hang or back screen occurs shortly after lauching Plus! games. Plus! screen saver works okay though.

Updating the driver and/or tweaking the card settings as suggested in the ATI FAQ pages does not help except if I disable DirectDraw or Direct3D accelerations the hang does not happen, but of course programs using DiretX either does not work or performance sucks.

I later found the problem happens if I have 1GB memory (Kingston 512K * 2). If I remove one of the memory chips and only have 512K everything starts to work normally. I don't releally need that much momory so this is my workaround for now ;)

Thanks.

>> Re: ATI 9600 pro problems hang freeze
Today, my friend let me borrow his Power-Color Radeon 9600 Pro. I put it in my machine, played a game, and it froze. This eliminated the possibility that the culprit is the card itself.

Logically, we should start to think what playing a game requires, and remove those components one by one till the games get fixed. I.e. RAM. Games are VERY dependendant on RAM, so if one of your RAM sticks are broken, so will your game. Tomorrow I'm going to remove each of my RAM sticks one by one, until I see which one is the one causing me months of problems. And I advise you do too, before sending off an RMA and having to wait weeks before getting a new card which also is broken or buying a $100 new PSU/liquid nitrogen cooling and not getting any new results.

Other things may include sound cards, IRQ slots, overheating, mice drivers even.

By the way, I'm using Hynix RAM, and they have a poor reputation of stability.

I'm owner of a Sapphire 9600 XT 256 MB and this is a listing of steps I've tried to fix my freeze problem (so far without satisfying results):

Complete new installation of Windows 2000 and XP with latest drivers/updates/patches etc.

Different settings of my mainboard concernig AGP (write, fastwrite, aperture size) etc.

Different versions of ATI's Catalyst driver including latest 3.10

Different settings for Catalyst ranging from low resolution to turned off AA/AF, Z buffer, VSync etc.

Different settings for clock rates (core, memory) overclocking as well as underclocking, underclocking the card has shown some improvement (BF1942, ToEE, WC3 running between 1-2 h before freeze).

Seperation of IRQ-Channels (every device with own IRQ) with no effect

Disabling Onboard sound - no effect

Disabling all Onboard functions - no effect

Checked if Card is overheating - it's absolutely not!

Tried a Logitech Mouse removing all previously used MS drivers - no effect.

My system:

ECS K7S5A
2 x 256 MB Infinion PC133 SDRAM
AMD 1800XP
Maxtor HDD, LiteOn CDRW

The same system with an old NVidia GeForce2 MX worked 100% without any problems.
I'm really frustrated with this card! If there is some miracle doctor out there, i would be grateful for any help.

Hi folks, I have had DX9B installed for a couple of weeks, before this I had no bother at all with my Gigabyte 9600 Pro card, but cos Freelancer needs DX9 I had to install it. Now my problem is that every now and then the mouse pointer will freeze. Not the the whole PC, just the mouse pointer. I used to uninstall the mouse and re install it with the game running in the background to unfreeze it, but in the past few days I have found that simply unplugging the mouse and plugging it back does the trick. So if anyone wants to try it. This will work only if the game is running with just mouse pointer problems. Weird huh. Still I plan to revert to DX 8.1 after I have finished with Freelancer.
I am using the Cat 3.4 cos they seemed okay, but they may not be suitable for DX9, still I'm not going to change too much for the sake of one game. Hope DX10 comes out soon and that the problems are sorted.

To Mesut Özhan:

I have the exact board as you - perhaps the rev is different, I have a rev 1.x board. If so, your mileage may vary.

However I always encountered issues with two sticks of SDRAM in the system. I don't believe it was determined why, but several things were mentioned:

1. The K7S5A is a very power-specific board, it likes a decent PSU. Check the power on the 3.3, 5v and 12 v rail. I can't recall what the lowest should be but I think it was around 17 amps?
2. pull one stick of RAM.
3. If removing one stick of SDRAM does the trick, you might try different RAM. But I'm reasonably sure it was something to do with one stick of SDRAM. Perhaps not enough power to the SDRAM sockets while the DDR is fine?

These may not solve your 9600 pro issues, but it may be a step in the right direction. For me at least, it was worth it getting a single 512mb stick of DDR. It also increased my system's performance by about 15% and increased my benchmark scores slightly as well as frames per second in 3d games.

Certainly in my case with the Radeon 9000LE card, keeping only one 512MB (sorry about the unit K in my previous posting) memory chip works okay. I am sure the culprit is not a defect memory chip because I tried two Kingstone and one Legal Electronics 512MB DDR 2700 chips.

I tired another 64MB nVedia card, it seemed to work fine with two 512MB (total 1GB) memory chips installed.

My gut feeling is it should be a combination of a few factors (this particular brand of card for sure, game program logic with specific features involving DirectX, when large RAM or multiple RAM chips are involved).

Thanks for your reply. Well the two SDRAM-sticks with this board might be a problem, so i will give it a try.

>> new issue with cat 3.10's

I spoke too soon...well, the new drivers fixed everything else with my PC, but now for some reason 3dmark 2001SE won't finish! It dies on the Nature test (which uses bump mapping) and if I disable Nature then it dies on the bump mapping tests. GRRRR.

The error message I get says something like "the adapter does not support normal bump mapping, reduce the speed of your video card". Well, WTF? It supported it just fine BEFORE these drivers came out! And it doesn't matter if I run the bench oc'd to the max (501/371) or underclocked to 384/290, I get the same error. I also lost about 200 points on 3dmark 2003.

*sigh* Yet another driver issue, or I wonder if this is fixable? so far I have only seen one other person report this after I googled for it. I might go back to the 3.4's for testing to see if the new drivers broke 3dmark or if there is something else going on with my system.

>> two sticks of ram vs one stick

It could be something like that, but I have seen enough of this 59 page thread to know that there were multiple people with only one stick of ram. I only have one 512 meg stick myself.

Still not enough information to draw any decent conclusion except that ATI did make a decent attempt to fix it in the 3.10 drivers.

okay, new idea has popped up with my freezing 9600 pro:

it appears my card is listed under secondary in ATi's control panel under adapter > adapter string, but not under display properties > settings. tomorrow i'll uninstall my drivers, reinstall them, but this time, leave out the secondary 9600 (for TV). every time i install my drivers, i select both.

I've been having the same problem with C and C generals and I have a 9600 xt. I need to turn the hardware acceleration down one notch or else the game freezes. Now the cursor blinks but I have to deal with it because I don't think it's a hardware problem, I think it's a direct X problem and here's why: I used to have a ATI 7500 and that would do the same exact thing - freeze the comp and the sound would stick. The 7500 was meant to only use direct X 7, not 9 like the newer games and cards. Generals only requires 8.1 whereas I have 9b installed to play Max Payne 2. Max Payne 2 doesn't crash no matter what I have the acceleration set to. So I think the problem is that the Generals would prefer using direct X 8.1. I've looked through a lot of this thread and realized no one has suggested this that I can see and it might explain why so many different setups have problems. Besides I feel better blaming microsoft than ATI or ASUS. It would help if anyone can think of games they have that don't freeze and what direct X they "prefer."

I have the following computer configuration:
Processor: AMD 2700+
Mainboard: Soltek SLFRN2-RL
Power supply: QTEC 550W
IDE1: HDD40 (SEAGATE) master + HDD120 (IBM) slave
IDE2: CDRW LG master + DVDRW Pioneer 106 slave
Graphics card: Asus A9600XT/TVD
Modem: 56K
Sound Board: Creative Audigy
Other: Pixelview 878 TV/Radio Card
OS: Windows XP SP1
I think is all!

The problem is the following:

My computer worked well, until I installed my new graphics card (before:
Chaintech GF4 MX440/64MB). After the installation all worked well, but
when I boot the computer in the next day (several hours later) it won't
boot. When I opened the computer I saw that the fan in the graphics card
didn't start, and the computer don't turn off unless I kept my finger in
power button several seconds. After I disconnect the extra fan, and
several tries to turn on the computer, it started.
This problem occurred every day from Thursday (Last thursday) until this
morning (yesterday), and it only occurs after several hours the
computer being disconnect.
I have already updated my motherboard to the last update available.
I'm going today to turn on the computer with all the CDRW/DVDRW DRIVES
disconnect from power supply, and the extra fan also, trying to prove
the relationship between the power supply and the graphics card
malfunction.
I have read that the Radeon 9600 chips/cards need very extra power, but
I think the power supply I have is sufficient.
I don't know if it is another problem, but the thing more strange, is
when the computer boot, the computer work very well, good benchmarks
(3dmark01, 3dmark03, aquamark3) without any crash and failures. But
after spending too much time disconnect won't boot again.
Have already tried to deactivate the SATA/RAID to see if it was a incompatibility between the
Motherboard and graphics Card.
Very strange is the only thing i can tell, but at this moment i'm using the referred computer to write this post and with the problematic card.
